My Super Ex-Girlfriend is the latest comic styling from director Ivan Reitman (Ghost Busters, Meatballs), master of the broad comedy. It is the story of Matt Saunders (Luke Wilson), an average guy who discovers that his girlfriend is actually a superhero. When Jenny Johnson (Uma Thurman) was just a teenager, she got super powers from a radioactive rock. Now she spends all her time saving Manhattanites from danger as sexy G-Girl. But when Matt tries to break up with her, he learns the hard way that breaking up with a superhero can make your life a super Hell.

From the trailers, My Super Ex-Girlfriend looked to me like it was going to be a straight-up romantic comedy with the underwhelmingly formulaic twist of the angry ex having super powers. In short, I fully expected it to be lame.

As it turns out, My Super Ex-Girlfriend is a send-up of the superhero genre that only masquerades as a romantic comedy. It only took one second of hearing Luke Wilson promise to accept a "chainsaw up his ass" if he crossed G-Girl to see that screenwriter Don Payne is having a go at the sub par dialogue and predictable plot points that are the hallmarks of big superhero movies. And if you ask me, that skewering is long overdue.

Although Luke Wilson is starting to sound more and more like his brother Owen with each line he delivers, Uma Thurman makes the bunny-boilery superhero girlfriend funny. The fabulously creepy/nerdy Rainn Wilson (The Office, Six Feet Under) is a fun choice as Saunders's best friend, and Hannah Lewis (of the Scary Movie series) is just so cute with those super-sibilant s's as Saunders' love interest that I think I'm developing a girl-crush on her. British comic Eddie Izzard (The Cat's Meow, Ocean's Twelve) also costars as G-Girl's arch-nemesis Professor Bedlam, and I will go to my grave loving every thing he does.

Is this movie going to rock your world? Maybe not. But it's an inspired, overlooked twist on typical romantic comedies, and I sure as heck liked it.
