While the 2007 Academy Awards nominees happily nurse their hangovers, others lie exhausted from a night of grinding teeth and plotting revenge. Here's a partial list of folks who might be a little angry with Oscar today.
Brad Pitt
Perhaps Pitt was too busy saving the world to mount a serious Oscar campaign. Personally, I think it was just another selfless act on Brad's part, since a Brad Pitt Oscar win would almost certainly have initiated Armageddon. And then there would be no more orphans left to adopt.
Boston DiCaprio
Somewhere deep in the recesses of Leo's subconscious, Boston DiCaprio is locked in a battle with South African DiCaprio over control of his ego, as the Academy nominated him for Blood Diamond and not for The Departed. That's wicked lame.
September 11th
United 93 didn't get nominated for Best Picture. Looks like the terrorists win again.
Anything with "Good" in the title
Both The Good Shepherd and The Good German came up largely empty, with the German garnering a nomination for Best Original Score and the Shepherd getting one for Best Art Direction. Or maybe it's the other way around.
Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris
While their film Little Miss Sunshine got nominated for Best Picture, Faris and Dayton were left out of the Best Director category. What, does the Academy think the movie directed itself?
Mel Gibson
How many heads does a guy have to lop off to get nominated? The Academy tossed Apocalypto a few bones with nominations in sound and makeup categories, but Gibson's latest dead-language epic was left out of the big ones.
Borat
The Academy overcame its long-standing prejudice against comedy with multiple nominations for Little Miss Sunshine, but Sacha Baron Cohen was passed over for Best Actor, despite turning in the best comedic performance of the year.
The Kennedys
In yet another tragedy for the Kennedy family, Bobby, Emilio Estevez's chronicle of Robert Kennedy's assassination, failed to tally a single nomination. Hasn't that family suffered enough?
Sylvester Stallone
Sly got shut out, despite the fact that his Rocky Balboa was basically a remake of the first Rocky, which won Best Picture in 1976. Maybe he'll have better luck next year with Rambo IV: Pearl of the Cobra.
Musical Theater
Broadway is in flames today after thousands of unemployed theater actors rioted in protest over the snubbing of Dreamgirls for Best Picture. The entire cast of Rent burned their jazz pants in a symbolic gesture of solidarity.
American Women
This year, the Best Actress categories are dominated by foreigners, and with Gwyneth Paltrow emigrating to England and Julia Roberts concentrating on her kids, that trend might not change anytime soon. Fortunately, American women still have a strong foothold on the Razzie awards. Thank God for Sharon Stone.
