The nightmare continues for Dreamgirls
By Thomas Leupp
Motown weeps tonight with the overwhelming diss of Dreamgirls by the Academy. Nominated for eight Oscars, the movie musical managed to take home only two statues, for Best Sound Mixing and Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Hudson).
In hindsight, Eddie Murphy's upset loss in the Best Supporting Actor category was a grim foreshadowing of things to come. The Academy didn't even toss Dreamgirls a bone for Best Original Song, even though it dominated the category with three nominations.
To add insult to injury, they gave the Best Director award to Martin Scorsese. Ugh. What has that guy ever done?
