During the press junket for his upcoming thriller Premonition with Sandra Bullock, actor Julian McMahon (who may be best known as Dr. Christian Troy on Nip/Tuck) took some time to dish on his part in this summer's Fantastic Four sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. McMahon will be reprising his role as Dr. Doom, one of the archetypal villains in the Marvel Universe--if not in storytelling as a whole.
"I had quite a lot to do, actually," said McMahon. "[Doom] goes through all these different transformations...Different to what happens in the comic or the cartoon."
So what will be happening? "First of all, you start with this: Dr. Doom has been in the casket for a couple of years...And he's pretty pissed off." He wakes up and "kind of just rips off his mask," says McMahon. "And he gets very ugly."
"[Doom] has his lair set up in some castle in Latveria," says McMahon. "With all these monitors and stuff. I don't know where he got 'em all from, but they're pretty cool! And he sees this kind of entity, which is the Silver Surfer."
And that, of course, sets Dr. Doom into motion. "Just knowing the comic books, I mean Dr. Doom is Dr. Doom," says McMahon. "He goes and tries to destroy everybody and get everybody's powers and all that kind of stuff. That's basically what the character is about."
There has also been quite a lot of talk about Doom's costumes in The Rise of the Silver Surfer. "The final costume is a pretty amazing costume," says McMahon. "It's a similar kind of mask, but it's kind of a larger type of fit. And probably a little more sturdy kind of look to it," he explains. "It weighed about 45 pounds, 50 pounds, and without the cape and stuff. But it's pretty extraordinary. It's kinda more Batman-esque in a way. But with the mask, it's obviously Dr. Doom."
Fanastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is scheduled to come out in June.
