A Trailer Tour of the Coen Bros. Filmography

The Coen Brothers' Oscar-Winning work, No Country For Old Men, is now on DVD mere weeks after taking home awards for Best Picture, Best Director(s), Best Supporting Actor (Javier Bardem) and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Coens are personal faves of mine. Love or hate the them, you are always guaranteed a highly original trip to the cinema each and every time out. We thought the timing was perfect to take a look back through the best Coen Brothers' movies, from their genre-breaking debut in Blood Simple to their cult classic Big Lebowski and on to 2008's Best Picture, No Country For Old Men. To give you a little refresher, we've got some Coen trivia you might not know, a quote from each movie and the original trailers. Enjoy!

Blood Simple (1984)

Trivia: A teaser trailer for the film was shot by the Coens prior to production featuring legendary Sam Raimi B-movie star Bruce Campbell in the Dan Hedaya role of Julian Marty. The hard-to-find footage featured a bloody Campbell crawling up the road in the exact scene Hedaya would later recreate for the final theatrical version.

Quote: "Now go on ahead, y'know, complain, tell your problems to your neighbor, ask for help, 'n watch him fly. Now, in Russia, they got it mapped out so that everyone pulls for everyone else... that's the theory, anyway. But what I know about is Texas, an' down here... you're on your own."

Raising Arizona (1987)

Trivia: Kevin Costner was originally offered the lead role as H.I. McDunnough but he turned it down.

Quote: "You want to find an outlaw, hire an outlaw. You want to find a Dunkin' Donuts, call a cop."

Miller's Crossing (1990)

Trivia: The Coen Brothers make a rare cameo as Casper's cousins. They are credited as Esteban and George Fernandez.

Quote: "It's gettin' so a businessman can't expect no return from a fixed fight. Now, if you can't trust a fix, what can you trust? For a good return, you gotta go bettin' on chance - and then you're back with anarchy, right back in the jungle."

Barton Fink (1991)

Trivia: Fink was written when the Coens were suffering writer's block during the writing of Miller's Crossing.

Quote: "We're only interested in one thing, Bart. Can you tell a story? Can you make us laugh? Can you make us cry? Can you make us want to break out in joyous song? Is that more than one thing? Okay!"

Fargo (1996)

Trivia: Despite being credited, Prince does not actually appear in Fargo as one of the victims. The Coens were just referencing one of Minneapolis' most famous natives. The part is actually played by Coen storyboard artist J. Todd Anderson.

Quote: "So that was Mrs. Lundegaard on the floor in there. And I guess that was your accomplice in the wood chipper. And those three people in Brainerd. And for what? For a little bit of money. There's more to life than a little money, you know. Don't you know that? And here ya are, and it's a beautiful day. Well, I just don't understand it."

The Big Lebowski (1998)

Trivia: "The Dude" is never seen bowling in the movie.

Quote: "Hell, I can get you a toe by 3 o'clock this afternoon... with nail polish."

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

Trivia: Homer is credited as a co-writer along with the Coens.

Quote: "Well Pete, I figured it should be the one with the capacity for abstract thought. But if that ain't the consensus view, then hell, let's put it to a vote."

No Country For Old Men (2007)

Trivia: Javier Barden initially turned down the role as Chigurh (for which he ultimately won the Oscar) telling the Coens "I don't drive, I speak bad English and I hate violence." The Coens' response was, "That's why we called you."

Quote: "It starts when you begin to overlook bad manners. Anytime you quit hearing "sir" and "ma'am", the end is pretty much in sight."
