By and large moms are amazing, and mostly the movies commemorate that. But what about the ones who fall short? No one has a holiday for them. So, in honor of those with less than stellar maternal instincts this Mother's Day, we took it upon ourselves to construct a Top Ten List of the World's Worst Movie Moms.
The Queen from Alien/Aliens
If the alien queen of James Cameron's pair of sci-fi classics spent less time laying eggs and more time tending to the kids she already has, maybe they wouldn't go around sneaking onto spaceships and bursting out of people's stomachs.
Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) from Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Poor John Connor. First dad up and gets himself killed moments after his conception, then mom becomes a paranoid, muscle-bound nutjob. Is it any wonder his only friend is a German-accented cyborg?
Stifler's Mom (Jennifer Coolidge) from American Pie
In the Weitz Brothers' coming-of-age sex comedy, the recently divorced mother of Steve Stifler (Seann William Scott) ends up seducing one of his classmates -- making her either the worst or best mom ever, depending on one's perspective.
Stephanie Smith (Kim Basinger) from 8 Mile
As Eminem's trailer trash single mom in the white-boy rapper's semi-autobiographical flick, Basinger is a model of bad parenting: sexually promiscuous, verbally abusive and an alcoholic. Her greatest crime, however, was bringing Eminem into the world.
Marge Thompson (Ronee Blakley) from A Nightmare on Elm Street
"He's dead, honey, because Mommy killed him." Thanks a lot, Mom. Not only is Margie a raging alcoholic, but she doesn't seem to think the undeniable connection between the man she and the soccer moms scorched and Nancy's nightmare boogeyman is worth looking into.
Mrs. Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) from Friday the 13th
Never underestimate the lengths a mother will go to in order to preserve the memory of her son. Whether it was the voices or pure blind maternal rage, Pamela Voorhees unleashed a trail of bloody revenge that she would pass on to her son for nine sequels (and counting).
Carolyn Burnham (Annette Bening) from American Beauty
Annette Benning's cringe-inducing performance as the nitpicking perfectionist ice princess makes us want to run away from the suburbs, too. And we don't even live there anymore.
Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) from The Graduate
A mom who sleeps with your boyfriend and then tries to marry you off to someone else to save face? We don't think so.
Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway) from Mommie Dearest
Faye Dunaway's depiction of the abused actress Joan Crawford dealt her adopted children is the quintessential film on bad parenting, and with good reason. We're still afraid of wire hangers.
Frieda Dorsett (Jane Hoffman) from Sybil
We're not sure 13 personalities are even enough to deal with surviving a floridly insane woman who hangs you upside down from the kitchen light and fills you up with an enema bag full of water, but that's just us.
