Big Screen Cougars: A Tribute

Of all of Sex and the City's contributions to our culture, none have proved more enduring than The Cougar -- that special breed of single woman, generally in her 30s or 40s, who tosses aside traditional notions of femininity with a bold, independent, sexually adventurous approach to life. While Carrie Bradshaw and her bed-hopping friends may not have coined the term, they definitely popularized it during their six-year fling with the Big Apple.

With Sex and the City: The Movie arriving in theaters, here's a tribute to some of the greatest Cougars ever to prowl on the big screen.

Rebecca De Mornay

Rebecca De Mornay / Risky Business (1984)

A street-wise hooker with a sharp business acumen, De Mornay taught college-bound teen Joel Goodsen (Tom Cruise) an unforgettable lesson in Entrepreneurship 101.

Susan Sarandon / Bull Durham (1988)

As a sultry southern belle whose favorite summer pastime consisted of bedding hot minor league prospects like Nuke Laloosh (Tim Robbins), Sarandon almost succeeded in making baseball look sexy.

Susan Sarandon
Linda Fiorentino

Linda Fiorentino, Vision Quest (1985)

In this coming-of-age classic, Louden Swain (Matthew Modine) lives out every teenage boy's fantasy when a beautiful, free-thinking drifter (Fiorentino) moves in and shows him the ropes. Featuring a cameo from future cougar Madonna.

Sharon Stone / Basic Instinct (1992)

Late bloomer Stone was 34 when her infamous crotch-flashing scene in this otherwise forgettable thriller made her an overnight sensation. 14 years later she went back to the well for Basic Instinct 2, and the response was decidedly less positive.

Sharon Stone
Angela Bassett

Angela Bassett / How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998)

Still rocking the guns that helped her earn an Oscar nomination for What's Love Got to Do with It five years earlier, 40-year-old Bassett romanced a much younger Taye Diggs in this Oprah-fied female empowerment tale.

Anne Bancroft / The Graduate (1997)

No list of cinematic cougars could be complete without the inimitable Mrs. Robinson. Bancroft's unforgettable turn as a bored, alcoholic housewife who sets her sights on 21-year-old Ben Braddock birthed a lasting archetype.

Anne Bancroft
Demi Moore

Demi Moore / Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003)

Real-life cougar Moore (her hubby Ashton Kutcher is 15 years her junior) upstaged younger castmates Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz with the help of a smokin' hot black bikini.

Rene Russo / The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)

In this sexy 1999 remake, 45-year-old Russo showed off a remarkably toned body that would make women half her age envious.

Renee Russo
Kim Basinger

Kim Basinger / Door in the Floor (2004)

Almost 20 years after rolling around with Mickey Rourke in the softcore epic Nine 1/2 Weeks, Basinger went full-frontal at age 51 in this 2004 indie as a grieving housewife who sleeps with her husband's young assistant.

Jane Seymour / Wedding Crashers (2005)

The 54-year-old Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman star gave this 2005 blockbuster comedy its most shockingly hilarious moments chasing Owen Wilson as the suburban seductress Kathleen "Kitty Cat" Cleary.

Jane Seymour
Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren / Calendar Girls (2003)

Feisty Mirren has played strong women throughout her career, most recently winning an Oscar last year for The Queen. She's never been afraid to bare it all, either, defying convention (and gravity) by going topless at 58 in Calendar Girls.

I wish Diane Keaton was more interested in younger guys because she would make a great Cougar. Full-frontal flash at age 57 in Something's Gotta Give up there with Mirren.
