Batman Villains & Casting Speculation

As The Dark Knight mounts its record-breaking box office run, talk of future sequels has already reached a fever pitch. But which foes might Batman face in a potential follow-up? Following in the footsteps of Heath Ledger's terrifying turn as the Joker would be an unenviable task for any actor, but the real challenge could lie with director Christopher Nolan and his brother/writing partner Jonathan. A peek at the remaining adversaries in Batman's legendary "Rogue's Gallery" reveals a less-than-appealing cast of cartoonish, over-the-top characters ill-suited for the darker, more realistic vision of the Caped Crusader established in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Any characters plucked from remaining ranks of Batman villains would almost certainly have to be reinvented to fit the Nolan mold: that is, no supernatural abilities, no outsized physical proportions and no preposterous origin stories. Here's a list of foes with a shot at making the cut.

Likely Suspects

The Riddler

The Riddler

A smooth-talking misanthrope with severe obsessive-compulsive tendencies, the Riddler taunts his pursuers with puzzles and devises elaborate deathtraps for his victims.

Previously portrayed on-screen by: Frank Gorshin, John Astin, Jim Carrey

Could be re-made in the Nolan mold as: a modern-day version of the Zodiac Killer.

Potential actors: Guy Pearce, Ewan McGregor, Ryan Gosling

The Penguin

The Penguin

A waddling, corpulent gent with a large, beak-like nose, the Penguin is best known for pioneering the use of umbrellas as weapons.

Previously portrayed on-screen by: Burgess Meredith, Danny DeVito

Could be re-made in the Nolan mold as: a dapper, diminutive mob boss with a serious bird fetish and a Napoleon Complex.

Potential actors: Jack Black, Philip Seymour Hoffman

Poison Ivy

Poison Ivy

a sultry former botanist, Poison Ivy can communicate with plants, is immune to all poisons and secretes a toxin that allows her to literally kill a person with a kiss.

Previously portrayed on-screen by: Uma Thurman

Could be re-made in the Nolan mold as: An environmental zealot turned eco-terrorist -- like the Unabomber, only more creative (and female).

Potential actors: Hilary Swank, Angelina Jolie

The Mad Hatter

Mad Hatter

an expert in field of mind control, the demented, unstable Mad Hatter manipulates others with the aid of a device embedded in the brim of his hat. Inspired by the Lewis Carrol's Alice in Wonderland character.

Previously portrayed on-screen by: David Wayne

Could be re-made in the Nolan mold as: A renegade Wayne Enterprises employee who utilizes nanotechnology to scramble the brains of his foes.

Possible actors: Daniel Day-Lewis, Jude Law, Joaquin Phoenix

Black Mask

Black Mask

A powerful mob boss with aristocratic roots similar to those of childhood friend Bruce Wayne, his trademark fashion accessory is a mask carved from the ebony coffin of his mother.

Previously portrayed on-screen by: Nobody

Could be re-made in the Nolan mold as: The Black Mask is rumored to have made an appearance in early drafts of The Dark Knight, as a would-be industrialist who turns to crime after his company is absorbed by rival Wayne Enterprises.

Potential actors: Viggo Mortensen, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman (if Marvel lets him)

Longshots

Bane - A steroid-pumped madman who broke the back of the comic book Batman in the early '90s. Bane's forgettable cameo in 1997's disastrous Batman & Robin broke the back of his movie career.

Killer Croc - Batman's reptilian adversary has been a regular fixture of the comic in recent years. His sci-fi features and unimaginative name, however, make him a poor candidate for Nolan's universe.

Mr. Freeze - Like Bane, Mr. Freeze is a Joel Schumacher casualty. His character is probably too preposterous for Nolan anyway.

Clayface - A shapeshifter who can alter his appearance into any form he chooses, Clayface is too sci-fi (and too similar to the Spider-Man 3 villain Sandman) for this version of Batman.

Catwoman - With memories of Halle Berry's franchise-killing spin-off still fresh in fans' minds, don't expect Catwoman to be prowling around Nolan's Gotham City anytime soon.

Who do you think should be the villain in Batman 3? Leave us a comment below.

    Ewan McGregor- The Riddle sinister
Hilary Swank- The cute but deadly Ivy
Black mask- could be any or some one else
Now Jessica Alba(if allowed from Marvel) she shoud appear as catwoman being more or less as a opening scene, where she is in a crime of stealing a jewel or somethin then all the sudden the Cape Crusader comes and uses self defense moves when she attacks with her razor blade claws.. i think it would be a sweet opening to get the party statrted and a attention getter...

I think Daniel Day-Lewis would be an excellent choice for the role of the Mad Hatter. Personally, I have only one actor in mind to play the Riddler, and that's David Bowie. He previously worked with Christopher on 'The Prestige' (playing the part of Nikola Tesla). Also, I believe that Bob Hoskins would be a fabulous choice for the Penguin, but I absolutely can't see Jack Black in the role.

I think they need a bevy of villains to throw gotham into chaos. Some minor. Some more prominant. Villians should/could include ONLY those that were created in the comic books. Possibilities include:

Mr. Zsasz - Michael Emerson, Jackie Earle Haley (already working with DC on Watchmen)
Anarky - Elisha Cuthbert, Jena Malone
Hush - Leonardo di Caprio, Matt Damon
Hugo Strange - Mos Def, Clive Owen
Dr. Death - Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin
Talia al Ghul - Carla Gugino, Rose McGowan

I also think that catwoman should probably be in the third installment. She is the staple batman villain behind Joker. Also, it seemed to (maybe) allude to a possible catwoman appearance in the Dark Knight when Fox tells Bruce that his new armor will fend of cats. It could work if someone really good like Scarlett Johansson or Rachel McAdams did it.

Needless to say, I think Phillip Seymour Hoffman may have been born to play Nolan's penguin.

Finally, Daniel Day Lewis and Javier Bardem are perfect villains, and I think Ryan Gosling would be an AWESOME Riddler (but Rachel McAdams probably couldn't play catwoman in the same picture).

I don't know, food for thought I guess.

YES! I'm glad you said it because if not I would have brought it up. Fox definitely mentioned fighting off cats which, for me at least, automatically led me to believe that they were insinuating a future role for Catwoman. I personally wouldn't mind it at all. After all, the older, hokier Batman movies were not the most loved among critics, but Nolan revived the story with a brilliant and fresh new take. I absolutely believe he could do the same for Catwoman.

I think that the Riddler would be the way to go with tying in another villain as they did with Ra Ah Gul and Scarecrow and Carmine Falcone and then with The Joker and Two-Face and Sal Maroni. It would be cool if they had the Riddler tied in with maybe the Mad Hatter or even Man-bat. Man-bat would be a huge stretch because it would require a lot of cgi, which apparently christopher nolan hates to use.

It would also be cool if they had Boss Zucco as the mob boss villain and introduced Dick Grayson, but never show Robin and just have Dick Grayson in the helping out from the sidelines role as Lucious Fox did.

Wow, sorry saw this bulletin and had to say something. Clayface is not totally unrealistic, just needs to be reimagined, after all he's a master of disguise actor, which isn't totally out of the ordinary as the Matt Hagen character. But in the graphic novel Arkham Asylum, he's portrayed as more like someone with a horrible skin disease rather than a gooey version of Spiderman's sandman and the T-1000. Guy Pearce is too bad*** as a riddler though he was good as Warhol, so I can see it. Ryan Gosling doesn't really look the part, too young I'd guess. I don't see Ewan McGreagor but I heard that they were going to set up Anthony Michael Hall, as the Riddler ? though he's the reporter in Knight so I doubt it. The Penguin was already rumored as Bob Hoskins. Philip Seymore Hoffman I can see, Jack Black, no chance in hell. Hillary Swank doesn't have the exact sex appeal for the part, Angelina Jolie might be too distracting because well SHE'S ANGELINA JOLIE, so I'd see an unknown or serious makeup playtime so it wouldn't take an audience out of the story. Um the mad hatter is very short, and awkward, non of those actors come close to fitting, though Joaquin is good at playing a kind of whimsical madman who thinks he's in love (gladiator) Ian Holm would be more fit for this part. Black mask, come on, he's a guy in a ****ing mask, you don't need an A list celebrity for this one, same as the didn't need one for Zsasz in Begins. Those are all great actors, but is this really a list in speculation of people Nolan's worked with, who are A list and academy nominees as oppose to who'd be most right for the part ? Killer Croc is also not out of reach in terms of realism, there's an actual rare skin disorder where people develop scales, he can be an underground wrestler who files his teeth, wrestling ring owned by the mob. Tada! Mr. Freeze is just barely dueable, if he's re-imagined like the cartoon did. (*Emmy winning episode) Catwoman would be too distracting. A No Man's Land adapt.

i totally agree about using clay face, just let him be a scarred man and have him use make up and disquises like mission impossible face makers (kind of) and he could play a more clandestine and behind the scenes destructive role. but by the way although none of the madhatter characters fit the role to his phyisical characteristics, there is no doubt that Daniel Day Lewis would do amazing in the part

      A. They said the same thing about Heath Ledger.
      B. Ryan Gosling is a great actor (see half nelson) and I think is perfect for Nolan. Thinking outside the box is what has made these movies so great.

First of all if riddler was to be made please use Guy pearce he is a phenomanal actor who isnt seen enough, don't forget his amazing performance in momento.

But there is a better villian: I personally believe that the firefly was an amazing pyromaniac enemy of batman. Although Nolan i am sure would mold him out of his over-the-top metal jet suit, a sadistic and murderous pyromaniac who loves to quote: "watch the world burn"- would make a perfect villian and i think he deserves a look

I love the Ryan Gosling suggestion for the Riddler! And the Zodiac idea! (That's just what I was thinking- it's like you guys are in my head!)

I don't think Bane (Nathan Jones? Michael Clarke Duncan?) is a long shot at all. He's a primo Bat-villain who needs to be re-imagined the right way. Just as smart and cunning as his idol, Batman- but 5 times as strong. He'd work alot better than Poison Ivy (Amy Adams? Isla Fisher?) would in Chris Nolan's universe.

For Mad Hatter, how about Paul Giamatti or Ian Holm (Bilbo Baggins)?

Mr. Freeze (Alan Arkan? Christopher Lloyd?) would be the toughest incarnation (ice suits and ray guns?), but his tragic origin story is the most deserving of the big screen. If anyone could figure out a way to make him realistic, Nolan can.

I agree that Bane would be a GREAT villian. However, I wouldn't want to see him in the movie solely for the fact that it would terminate the new Batman series (because in the comics, Bane is the one who broke Batman's back).

daniel day for sure, but i think a man with a more narrow and pointy face( possibly foreign as well) would do better the hoffman, not to discredit hoffman as a great actor

Philip Seymour Hoffman Should play the penguin, he would be perfect for the role.

I agree as well. But here's my picks:

The Riddler- Johnny Depp-(In a recent interview he said, 'I think it would be a fun gig.') or Adrien Brody
      Penguin- Phillip Seymour Hoffman
      Catwoman- Really?
      Poisin Ivy- REALLY?
      Mad Hatter- Adrien Brody

I think Ewan McGregor would be an interesting Riddler, if he can be sinister enough.

ewan mcgregor could make a cool villian, he always reminded me of alex from a clockwork orange (which i think is perfect for the part of Riddler).
