Tim Burton re-invented the Batmobile with this model. Inspired by a Harrier Jump Jet, with rear lights from a Ferrari, and headlamps from a Honda Civic. It was armed with two Browning machine guns and a grappling gun.
Tim Burton: "It made us kind of laugh, because it was tough, but it was kind a perverse, it had a weird quality to it that I can't quite put my finger on."
In 1995 Joel Schumacher gave the Batmobile a campy makeover that went well with the movie's campy style. Fans of the franchise rejected both the car and the movie, and the superhero hung dormant for a decade.
Joel Schumacher: (Could not be reached for comment.)
In 2005 Christopher Nolan radically changed the Batmobile with the "Tumbler," which fused a Lamborghini and a Humvee.
Christopher Nolan: "I wanted to rethink the Batmobile. It's a key component of Batman's arsenal which is a more grounded reality in which we're trying to base this story."
For The Dark Knight, Nolan didn't change the Tumbler, but created even more excitement with the Batpod.
Christopher Nolan: "I decided very early on that I wanted to do a 2-wheeled vehicle, not exactly a motorbike, it was more the idea of having sort of an anti-aircraft gun on wheels that was sort of the jumping off point for it."
Batpod trivia: There's only one stuntman in the world who was able to drive the Batpod, 44 year-old Frenchman Jean-Pierre Goy. He had to lean his upper body forward, almost horizontally, and steer with his elbows.
