Mike Richards: Pineapple Express opens this Wednesday, that's tomorrow, it's the fifth and final Judd Apatow-produced comedy of 2008. Just five? Lazy. Dailies' Gerrad Hall spoke with Mr. Apatow. What's he doing with his free time?
Gerrad Hall: I don't think he has free time, Mike. But he did have some fears making this movie... and what you could call an accidental career. But Judd Apatow has found himself in a very lucrative position.
Gerrad Hall: Well now, this is kind of one of the movies [Pineapple Express] wrapping up the Summer of 2008, so that's a good position to be in.
Judd Apatow: I like to be the wrap-up movie. Yah know all the other good movies, yah know they're all big, they've got their Batman, Hancock special effects, they're all slick, but at the end you get a little scrappy doobie movie.
Gerrad Hall: There's plenty of action in this to compete with the other guys though.
Judd Apatow: But we like it cause it's like Chuck Norris-level action, yah know. It's all about fists and blowin' up cars. It's a little Smokey and the Bandit kind of feel.
Gerrad Hall: That's very true, yeah. Now, you don't do a whole lot of action, and for good reason, right? You don't really like doing them?
Judd Apatow: I don't think, I don't want any one to get hurt for a joke. They're like, hey I'm blowing up the barn tonight, I'll be home under the covers, I'm just...
Gerrad Hall: Turn off the cell phone. I don't want to know what happens.
Judd Apatow: I don't wanna know. Yeah, call me if anyone's in jail.
Gerrad Hall: Well now, you're 40 years old, only 40 years old. Is what's happening with your right now professionally, was this, like, goal-wise where you'd hoped to be at this age?
Judd Apatow: Yah know I had no goal to do any of this, this wasn't, I just wanted to be a stand up comedian when I started and then I realized that I wasn't good at it. And so I started writing more, but I never thought about writing and directing, I just wanted to be on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson or something.
Gerrad Hall: And now ironically though you are doing standup, kind of in preparation for your next movie.
Judd Apatow: Yeah the next movie, um, many of the characters play stand-ups and so I...
Gerrad Hall: Funny People.
Judd Apatow: Yes, and I started doing it to remind myself of the terror, the diarrhea and the ceaseless neediness and the wound that won't heal. Uh, and just a few times doing stand-ups and it all came back.
Gerrad Hall: Funny People, the movie we were talking about there, stars Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill... a plethora of, in fact, very funny people. It starts shooting in September. Look for it to hit theaters July of next year.
