Sam Rubin: The romantic comedy Vicky Cristina Barcelona, the 39th movie Woody Allen's written and directed, opens Friday. The movie features friendship at its core. Dailies' Gerrad Hall is here now with more on the friends.
Gerrad Hall: The Vicky and Cristina of the title is who we're talking about, here. Cristina is Scarlett Johansson... Vicky, Rebecca Hall. The characters are polar opposites in many ways... especially when it comes to love.
Gerrad Hall: There's a love triangle, it's meaty, it's sexy. It's so unique.
Scarlett Johansson: Yeah, it is unique, I mean it's an unconventional love story I guess. It's like obsessive love, and the love that friends have for each other, and committed love. People are so complicated and relationships are complicated and it's hard to kind of yah know put a tag line on the story.
Gerrad Hall: Not hard, though, to explain her appeal to her Vicky Cristina Barcelona writer and director Woody Allen. This is their third movie together.
Scarlett Johansson: We formed a really great friendship and I think we work well together, we have almost unspoken understanding. I'm just fortunate enough to fit into that young woman role in his mind. It's just wonderful to be able to work with your friends.
Gerrad Hall: You're absolutely fantastic in this movie. Only your third movie. Yes?
Rebecca Hall: Yeah. I don't think I could feel my legs for the first two days. I was kind of a bit like, just hold it together, just get the lines out, just make sure he doesn't fire you and it will be fine.
Gerrad Hall: With Vicky, she's this... she's kind of hard headed, it seems. Do you think that's why she and Juan Antonio but heads so much?
Rebecca Hall: Um yeah, I do actually. I think the thing about Vicky is she meets someone that she thinks will have no effect on her and she I don't think she realizes the the depth of her ability to be passionate.
Gerrad Hall: I should point out ... I'm no relation to Rebecca -- though we are going to start charting our family tree just to be sure. Now, Rebecca has quite the year ahead of her -- she's in Frost/Nixon, out this December, and she's currently shooting Dorian Gray with Colin Firth.
