Twilight Interview -- Director Catherine Hardwicke gives light to Twilight.

Gerrad Hall: The movie version of the romantic vampire story Twilight is one of the most highly anticipated releases of the fall. The movie is directed by Catherine Hardwicke, who had an unusual path to calling the shots. The Dailies Naibe Reynoso has her story.
Naibe Reynoso: Catherine Hardwicke's career began as a production designer for movies, including Vanilla Sky and Tank Girl. But since directing Twilight, she's become one of the most sought-after female directors in Hollywood.
Naibe Reynoso: Because of the huge success of the book series, Twilight has a built-in audience of millions. So there was plenty of pressure on Hardwick.
Catherine Hardwicke: Yeah, it's a big thing to live up to but I was very excited to do it. I love the books. I got totally swept away with them, too. I had to make it cool so that I'd want to see it -- that everybody's going to want to see it. I just tried every day to work as hard as I could to do that.
Naibe Reynoso: Hardwicke was an obvious choice to direct. Her previous movies -- Lords of Dogtown, which featured a young Emile Hirsch and Heath Ledger, and Thirteen, starring Nikki Reed, who is also in Twilight -- are raw movies that focus on teen angst. Twilight has those ingredients, plus a romantic edge.
Catherine Hardwicke: For me, Twilight is more like Titanic or Romeo and Juliet -- these two people that fall madly in love with each other. They're not supposed to be together. They're from different worlds. And then its dangerous when they get together, and he has to protect her!
Naibe Reynoso: A few months ago, I visited the Oregon set of Twilight to watch Hardwicke in action.
Naibe Reynoso: There are a lot of stunts in this movie. Is it fun directing all of the stunts?
Catherine Hardwicke: Yeah, we like doing the stunts. We had a lot of fun, like on Dogtown, the skateboard cam and everything. Now, we're doing vampire cam!
Naibe Reynoso: Although filming for Twilight wrapped a few months ago, Hardwicke's job is far from over.
Catherine Hardwicke: We're still finishing the movie -- maybe even doing a few cool new scenes. Then, we've got all the music, picking what songs go in and the composition of the score sound effects. And all the visual effects. We've still got a lot to go.
Naibe Reynoso: Next, Hardwicke is set to direct The Monkey Wrench Gang, starring Jack Nicholson and Matthew McConaughey.
