Interview with Ghost Town Star Ricky Gervais

ReelzChannel's Andrea Bain sat down recently with Ricky Gervais, to talk about his role in Ghost Town as a dentist who's harassed by spirits after having a near-death experience.

Gervais in Ghost Town

Bain: You have a new title -- the Master of Uncomfortable Humor.

Gervais: Yeah, since The Office, the comedy of embarrassment was coined. I find that funny. I think that's what everyone identifies with because -- wherever you are, whatever you do in life, whatever your state -- the biggest fear, I think, is a social faux pas. No one wants to embarrass themselves. It's a constant through the universe that the worst thing is making a fool of yourself. So I sort of exploit that whenever I can.

Bain: In Ghost Town you had so many wonderful, awkward moments with the different characters. Was a lot of it ad-lib, or did you stick to script? You have a stand-up comedy background...

Gervais: Yeah, there's lots of ad-libs and you can see that. In fact, the very first day we were doing a scene, myself and Greg, we were ad-libbing, screwing up the takes and stuff, and we were all laughing. David [Koepp] kept us laughing, the director, and after two hours of this he came over and he went, "Oh, do you think we could try one as it is in the script?" So we went, "Yeah, OK." But the ad-libs are in there. It's fun.

Bain: It works really well. Now, when you signed on you had some rules before you were gonna do the movie...

Gervais: There was one, yeah, no nudity. No one wants to see this.

Gervais Shows Off Cleavage

Bain: Just a little? Not even a little?

Gervais: Not even. Listen, I might show a bit of cleavage. I will show a bit of cleavage. I'd say I only ruined 30 percent of the takes. There was a kiss in it, and I just thought, that's a bit cliché. It doesn't mean anything, and I was trying to do something. My favorite romantic comedy of all time is The Apartment, and at the end, when you think they're gonna kiss, she just says, "Shut up and deal." And it's classy. So we came up with a line: Tara says, "Sometimes it hurts when I smile." And I say, "I can fix that." Which I think is timeless. But I stick to the no nudity. No one ever wants to see this. Trust me.

Bain: That was good. I enjoyed that cleavage. I'm just letting you know that. I enjoyed that very much...

Gervais: I might wax next time.

Bain: OK, I'm trying to focus here. This movie, besides it being really funny, has a wonderful message. I even found myself crying, and I didn't want anybody to know. What would you like the audience to walk away from this film thinking about? Besides the fact that you're hilarious...

Gervais: People say, can you sum this up in one word? And I was like "sweet." I think it's a really sweet film. It's comedy plus. I think it's very funny, but there is something else there. It's not just a disjointed string of gags, or farce. It's really nice, and I fell in love with the film when we started helping out the ghosts. It's hard to resist something like that. And it's a film about redemption. He's a Scrooge type character, and in the end, you feel that he's sort of made a bit of a difference, which is nice.
