Tracking Kevin Smith's Career Trajectory

Clerks Mallrats Chasing Amy Dogma Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back Jersey Girl Clerks II Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Clerks

(1994)

Smith bursts onto the scene with his $27,000 debut. Becomes the indie darling of penis and fart jokes.

Mallrats

(1995)

Not so fast Kevin. The stoner college crowd may appreciate your sensibilities, but the rest of America has zero interest.

Chasing Amy

(1997)

Back on the indie scene, Smith digs deeper to deliver penis and fart jokes with a heart. Reception is warm and welcoming.

Dogma

(1999)

Once again, Smith jumps the gun on mainstream crossover. Amy's success leads to bigger cast and budget, but end result is mixed bag.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

(2001)

Intended as a final send-off to members of his View Askew fan base, it's harmless enough and completely forgettable.

Jersey Girl

(2004)

Smith's first "adult" movie is also his most public embarrassment. Bennifer implosion adds insult to injury.

Clerks II

(2006)

A public admission of defeat, Smith goes back to his origins and makes first movie again.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

(2008)

Smith recruits Apatow stars and makes final stab at mainstream acceptance.

I'm sorry to hear so many have such a low opinion on these movies. I for one think he is a director of his time. I find his work to be riot and split my sides even now. I can watch any of his works and i still can find them funny today. If i had to pick one i'd say Dogma. Most people don't get the sense of humor or even dark comedy which is a play on words. He does that and adds the simple things. I hope he never loses his drive i hope he continues to make the films he does today.

Dogma is the movie i frist saw, from Kevin Smith. Jersey girl was a great film and started his chesse. a romantic theme for any hollywood film would seems typical, depending the fan base. when you start supporting Kevin Smith you'll see his creativity, and his talent. Me personally did not start enjoying kevin smith films intil Jay and Silent bob strike back. And Clerks II had me on the floor.

Clerks one of the best movies ever?? Kevin Smith has only made bad movies, Chasing Amy being the least intolerable.

Chasing Amy and Dogma were pretty good. The rest were forgetable as far as I'm concerned. I am hoping that the Zack and Miri movie turns out as funny as it looks in the trailer.

I do have to disagree, as Clerks was one of the best movies ever.
