Whatever Works: Woody Allen Casts His Twin

Early in his career, Woody Allen famously cast himself as the male lead in his movies, making a name for himself as an actor in Bananas, Annie Hall, Manhattan, and many others. As he grew older, Allen kept the neurotic persona but has occasionally charged other actors with the role, including John Cusack, Will Ferrell, and Jason Biggs.

For his upcoming release Whatever Works, Allen has once again thrown the role onto someone else, casting Curb Your Enthusiasm's Larry David as the lead. While it was a bit of a stretch for someone like Ferrell to take up Allen's mantle, with just a little digging it's clear that this role won't be too difficult for David. In fact, their similarities are pretty stunning.

Check out the evidence below:

Woody and David's many similarities
  1. Both: Best-known trait: high level of neurosis
  2. Allen: Receding hairline
  3. David: Hairline already receded
  4. Both: Has worn the same pair of easily recognizable glasses for the past 45 years
  5. Both: Permanent New Yorker accent (Born in Brooklyn and, while moved elsewhere, essentially has never left.)
  6. Both: Not exactly noted for athletic ability
  7. Both: Not a great actor, but covers this up with clever writing and always playing the same part
  8. Both: Public is unclear, at best, on how different he is privately from his screen persona
  9. Both: Second-best-known trait: penchant for seeing himself with younger women
  10. Both: His name consists of two first names (assuming you're a woodpecker)
  11. David: Had small roles in Allens' Radio Days and New York Stories
  12. Allen: Less surprisingly, also had roles in those movies
  13. Both: Former stand-up comedian, but hasn't performed seriously in years
