Breaking Dawn: Will the Movie Beat the Book?

After Robert Pattinson’s announcement that Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in Stephenie Meyer’s ridiculously popular Twilight Saga, will hit the big screen, we got to thinking: Will it make a good movie? And more important, will it turn out better than the book?

Breaking Dawn is very different from the first three novels in the series (Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse) and saw numerous mixed reviews during its release week. The millions-strong fan base was divided — everyone either loved it or hated it.

We’ve come up with 10 ways the movie could either rake in major box-office bucks or epically fail in a way not seen since Speed Racer dropped off the face of the planet. Even Pattinson might not be enough to save this one.

1. Bella and Edward's Wedding

Bella and Edward's WeddingThe wedding and first 100 pages of Breaking Dawn is, without a doubt, the most entertaining part of the book. It’s like old style Twilight, with every character acting as they should (except for Edward and the garter ... weird much?), and the ever-present Bella-Edward-Jacob love triangle. Unfortunately, the most anticipated event since the Millennium is over all too quickly and things start to get worse as soon as our vampire and his bride reach their honeymoon destination, the Isle Esme. When Breaking Dawn is finally made into a movie, more emphasis should be put into the wedding: It’s the last time a lot of fans felt like they were reading The Twilight Saga and not some dodgy fan-fic found on the Internet.

2. The "Sex" Scenes

The Sex Scenes

Yep, you read that right. Bella and Edward finally get it on, in what can only be described as the most absent sex scene written since the 1900s. The act itself is merely implied, with the only proof it happened some broken headboards and bitten pillows. Oh, and a very bruised Bella. How they’ll portray this in the movie is anyone’s guess, and no doubt complaints of abuse and domestic violence are a big fear of everyone involved with the movie. If it stays rated PG-13 like its predecessors, ardent fans of Bella and Edward can kiss goodbye to their much adored night of passion. Sorry kids, it’s still implication only.

3. Jacob's Third of the Book

Jacob's Third of the Book

Werewolf Jacob takes center stage for a third of the book in what is arguably the best section of the entire 800-page tome. He’s funny, realistic, and probably the only one in the book to actually stay in character. If you were a member of Team Edward before, I guarantee you’ll rethink your loyalty after reading Part 2. The young Jacob Black is seriously that endearing, redeeming what is an otherwise tiresome read. Look for Taylor Lautner to take center stage on the movie posters — he’ll be carrying this one solo.

4. Renesmee's Birth

Renesmee's Birth

Normal births are painful, right? They hurt, they’re messy, and yet some women have them time and time again. Stephenie Meyer takes birthing to the next level in Breaking Dawn by having a giant baby literally crack its way out of mommy dearest. Bella’s spine breaks, leaving her writhing around like a beetle stuck on its back. Edward swoops in to the rescue and rips the baby out of Bella’s uterus with his bare-yet-sharp vampire teeth, then proceeds to turn his beloved into a vampire in order to save her fragile human life. PG-13? Uhh ... no, not so much.

5. Renesmee Carlie Cullen

Renesmee Carlie Cullen

Ignore the name for now, I’ll get to that soon enough. The idea that Bella and Edward could have a half-vampire, half-human baby is absurd, but to actually follow through on that idea is not only ridiculous but unnecessary. It turned Bella into a crazy, Rosalie-dependent robot and made Edward almost non-existent (more on that later). Renesmee is an annoying character and one that I have no desire to see immortalized on a DVD disc. Her accelerated growth and intelligence could prove to be quite a problem for casting agents, not to mention the poor director who has to work with a small child. Then there’s the topic of her name: Renesmee Carlie Cullen, a mishmash of Bella and Edward’s mothers’ (Renee and Esme) and fathers’ (Charlie and Carlisle) names. Eurgh.

6. A Major Lack of Edward

A Major Lack of Edward

We all know that Edward and Robert Pattinson are the driving forces behind this franchise, so what would happen if he ceased to exist for most of the fourth film? You’d have a problem, that’s for sure. In Breaking Dawn Edward is all but forgotten after the first 100 pages or so, and basically just mopes and moans whenever he pops up during the rest of the book. He’s a shadow of his former, chivalrous self and hardly utters a loving word to the girl he’s been waiting an eternity for. Summit would have to change this for the movie or Robert Pattinson may find himself strangely redundant. It’s no fun playing a vampire who’s lost his bite.

7. An Influx of Utterly Pointless Characters

An Influx of Utterly Pointless Characters

Many new vampires get introduced during the latter part of Breaking Dawn. Unfortunately, though, none of them really do much of anything. Yes, they can be pretty entertaining at times, but they’re in no way crucial to the story development. If casting execs can only choose a handful of new characters to cast, my vote would go to Garrett, Kate, Peter, Charlotte, and Alistair. The others (yes, there are plenty more) are barely worth mentioning and should only be cast if Summit suddenly find itself with more cash, and time, than it needs.

8. The Absence of Action

The Absence of Action

Hardly anyone dies in Breaking Dawn. Come to think of it, hardly anyone fights or even breaks a sweat. The vampire Irina is the only fatality and, seeing as we’re only introduced to her in this book, no one really cares about her anyway. Meyer botched things up when it came to killing her characters, all of whom just live happily ever after. There’s no epic battle like in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. In fact, there isn’t a sharpened fang in sight. It’s simple: Movies need action or the audience gets bored. It looks like the screenwriter, Melissa Rosenberg, will have to do what she’s done with New Moon and tweak some scenes here and there in order to keep the fans awake.

9. Superfluous Plot Points that Go Nowhere

Superfluous Plot Points That Go Nowhere

Bella’s power and J. Jenks. Both of these story developments are emphasized as important and crucial to the plot, yet neither really go anywhere. Yes, Bella saves everyone with her convenient shield that not even the most powerful of vampires can break, but it still wasn’t the revelation it should have been. If this is the reason that Edward can’t read Bella’s mind, I think I’d have preferred not knowing and making my own explanation — I’m sure it would have been better than a Lily Potter-esque love shield. The movie script will need to be edited better than the book or it’ll end up as an 8-hour timesink.

10. A Vampire War that’s Won by ... Talking?

A Vampire War That's Won by... Talking?

When was the last time you saw bloodthirsty vampires back down because some friendlier vampires asked them to? Never, of course. That’s just not how it works in the world of the undead. They fight, they kill, then they go and toast to their night. They don’t stand around talking for half an hour before deciding they have better things to do. It’s something that can almost be overlooked in a book, but in a movie? No way. Something has to happen to keep the audience entertained, and a friendly chat ain’t going to cut it.

Let us know your thoughts on the Breaking Dawn movie by leaving a comment below. Do you think it could prove to be the Summit’s biggest hit? Or is it more likely to fade away faster than Robert Pattinson’s hair color? Either way, it’ll be an interesting one to watch.

Breaking Dawn was My FAVORITE book in the series! I think they should definently make it into a movie. I think one movie like maybe 2 or 3 hours long would be perfect! Lots of other movies are that long, and if its rated R so what. Teens can be accompanied by their parents its a great book and it should for sure be a movie!

Breaking Dawn was my absolute favorite book of the series. I even wrote a term paper on it in school! It is arguably one of the most important books in
    the series.
What I don't understand is why people are so obessed with the whole domestic abuse/Bella's bruises thing. Of course, there will always be a critic that claims Breaking Dawn promotes domestic abuse, but true Twilight fans who have read the books will know better. So if the rating surpasses a PG-13 rating, so be it. I don't mind if they change the script a bit just to keep the movie going; after all who doesn't want to see more of Edward? But hopefully they won't just be cutting things out to make it for a younger audience.
I can't wait to see Bella as a vampire and the whole wedding scene...hell, I'm excited for the movie in general! I can't wait to see how Summit pulls it off!

I question whether Ms Davies has really read all the Twilight books-if she has, it is hard to believe she ever really "got it." Breaking Dawn is the culmination of the love story and must be made into 2 movies-to tell the whole story. Edward is an "old fashioned" man and waited to be intimate with Bella until they were married. There was no intentional abuse on their wedding night-only him "losing control" due to his love for Bella. She was not even aware of any pain-only her delight in the consummation of their love. Edward's remorse and pledge to not hurt her again is proof of that. Stephenie Myers captured this beautifully in the book-there is no reason to change anything for the movie. Twilight fans understand this. Jacob's book MUST be kept in-it is an integral part of the story-it shows Jacob's need to be part of Bella's life and what he was willing to give up to protect her. His imprinting on Renesmee explains the pull the 2 felt for each other. Edward is always present-his love for Bella is everywhere and drives his actions-with everyone, including Jacob. Surely Summit can show Renesmee's birth without showing everything detailed in the book-after all, what is imagination for? AND we do need all the "new vampires" to show who Renesmee is and what she can do. I agree that portraying Renesmee wll be a challenge-but I'm sure Summit will have enough funds to make it "real". "The fight that wasn't"-don't we wish this could happen in real life? I think this is a pivotal part of the story-and sets up a "what if the Cullens were the law" scenario-too bad that was not followed through. I also can't wait to see Bella as a vampire-that is what she has wanted since Twilight. And just to let you know-I am a great grandmother-not a teenager.

Personally I am a true fan of the Twilight Saga, movies and books. I've read and have all the books and Breaking Dawn is my ultimate favorite other than Twilight. I've read Breaking Dawn many times and I feel that they SHOULD finish the saga and make the movie. I mostly disagree with this "critic" because every part in this book is important, they should not leave anything out in my opinion. Who cares if its 3 or 4 hours like the Harry Potter movies, people will go see it and watch it all because they're fans of the books. And if it has to be "Rated R" then so be it, i would understand and so will others. They should have the movie script just like the book or close to it, or they'll be a lot of disappointed fans including me.

personally i absolutely loved this book....this is where i could get a closing to the whole saga and without it all of the twilight fans will be disappointed...you guys managed to keep edward in new moon more just do the same there...add more scenes i wouldn't mind separate movies if needed... and if they can keep the same pace as new moon had then it will all go well....if you do this right this will be the biggest movie of summit's existence so plan it out and the fans will understand if it takes longer to make because it is the prize possession of stephanie meyer. They CAN DO IT i know they can...and if they pull it off they will be one of the most successful movie businesses ever!!!

I think they could do it and do it right. They will need to be careful with keeping it interesting without straying to far from the book. They need to find a way to keep lots of Edward in it, bring on the angst! I feel that, as far as the bruising and such, leave it in. We all know that it wasn't his intention and I'm sure that they could bring out that aspect in the movie. It needs to be completed now that they started it! My biggest fear (and my only problem with the book) is that they will make Renesmee's bond with Edward almost obsolete. Imprint or not, I don't think that she would love Jake more than her father, as much..... maybe, but not more. I would hope that they would show a wonderful bond he's building with her. Like when he's humming Bella's lullabye to her. That would make it so wonderful! Just my opinion.

i really hope they show edward and renesmee's bond too, i love seeing him be a dad. and i don't think that renesmee loves jake more, it just a different type of love. bella describes the tone of renesmee's thoughts towards jake as possessive, like he's hers. (which he is undoubtedly) with edward i think it's more of an admiration and like he's her safe harbor, in a sense. i only think that she "thinks" about jake more than edward because he's more entertaining for her, at least that's my opinion. oh and also, since it's still in bella's point of view of course she's going to be fascinated and conflicted in some ways, by her daughter's new relationship with jake and would spend time examining and thinking about it, while edward's relationship with their daughter wouldn't be something to dwell on as much

I am an avid fan of twilight and the whole saga, I have read Breaking Dawn five times and I get more intriuged to see the movie every time. You can have all three movies out and leave us hanging with the fourth. I mean its not complete without breaking dawn, and to think about the movie, the kids have read the books, so why would the scenes in real life be any different? I think that it should be written with taste, and u can leave out the bruises and such, and you can leave out the birth scene or at least not show edward ripping bells belly apart, but it would be a waste and dissapointment to some of us that live their lives in the twilight saga. The love of edward and bella has made my marriage os much better and I hope and pray to see Breaking Dawn....I* love them all.....Stephenie Meyer could not have written a total set of more inspirational and awesome books..I have a dream of meeting her and the cast someday

i think the fans need Breaking Dawn. I do. No fan is going to care if they change things around a little bit. And if it needs to rated R then so be it. Those parts are needed. Plus everyone has got to want to see Bella a vampire Thats all she talks about. And how nothing changes their love and the whole family side of things, and how Jacob really fits in Bella's life. It explains the attraction between them. I say we need it.

    8. This part I was definitely disappointed in. I know that not every movie should have action scenes and not everything can be solved with violence and fighting. But Stephenie spent so much time building up this fight scene and had all these other vampires, who were interesting to meet, come to meet Renesmee and it became such a big deal and then at the end they talked for a little bit and then went home. I was disappointed in that, there could have been a little more excitement in that part.

    9. I thought that Bella's and Renesmee's powers were both very helpful to not only them but everyone around them. Their powers played a key role in keeping them and their family safe and I was excited to find out that Bella even had a power, because not all vampires have one.

    10. This is not your normal scary, blood, guts, gore, and deadly vampire story. This story is based on Love that just happens to involve vampires and werewolves. Both Robert and Kristen have said that they don't really see the vampires in this movie as vampires,. They see it more as a family who is helping two people over come obstacles to be with their true love. Which is exactly what Twilight is all about.

I find this article to be harsh and biased. All these parts played a key role in this book and I think it will be interesting to see how they make it into a movie. I know the director and everyone else will have a hard time with it, but they will figure it out and it will be seen regardless, because fans will want to see the story come to an end on screen.

And I will state that I do agree with some of the other comments as well. On the other hand though, I can see the other side of it.
    1. The wedding was anticipated since the beginning so everyone of course wanted to read about it and have that special moment take place.

    2. The sex scene: This book is intended for all ages: ALL ages and while I, a 24 year old, was a little disappointed with the lack of detail, I can understand why there is a lack of detail. Some of the fans are younger than teens and do NOT need to be reading, in great detail, about a sex scene that is taking place between a teenager, married or not, and a vampire, especially when the married teenager wakes up with bruises all over her body.

    3. I was surprised and excited when I first read that Jacob was narrating the story for a while. It changed things up a little bit and made the book more interesting, but at the same time I felt that his part was a little drawn out and had the "Feel sorry for me, take pitty on me" feeling.

    4. When it comes to the birth of Renesmee, I was a little surprised that it was that detailed in blood and gore, but it was interesting to read and make the book more interesting.

    5. I found Renesmee to be extremely interesting and very intriguing. It was interesting to read about a half human, half vampire baby with accelerated growth and a very crazy-interesting power. And it was intriguing to read how the rest of the characters interacted with her and see who she bonded with. Not to mention the fact that Jacob imprints on her, so we all know she is going to be safe.

    6. Edward was in the book, after the wedding, he just wasn't one of the main, main characters. There were so many different things that we were introduced to in Breaking Dawn that it would be hard to completely focus in on Edward.

    7. I am glad Stephenie introduce more characters into the book, it made it more exciting and stimulating. And it brought a sense of diversity to the book.

I am a Twilight fan, but I do have to agree a little with this article. But I do think that this article was a little harsh and biased. It does seem like the writer of this article is not a Twilight fan, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I think besides Renesmee and Bella's powers, the person who wrote this article is fairly right. If everyone would take a step back and put their love for Twilight on the back burner for a few minutes and look at this from another perspective, there is no action, there was a numerous amount of time spent on building up the fight scene only to have no fights, there was no detailed description of the honeymoon night, and after the wedding, Edward loses his vampire essence and pretty much just becomes invisible. I was very disappointed in the book, overall, I thought it was okay for a book, but it is going to be torture trying to make this book into a movie. I mean each section that this article talks about has to be very, and I do mean, very carefully thought out and planned, not to mention they actually have to find a director that can make all this stuff happen without losing the interest of the audience or without getting carried away, and they have to try to stay true to the book as well. It's almost an impossible job. So this movie could be like New Moon and bring in millions of dollars or it could turn out to be a failure, either way fans will go see it because they are passionate about the series and they want to see how it will turn out. Only time will tell. If they do make it into a movie it will definitely be interesting to see how the director handles it and what they do with everything.

First of all Twilight and New moon are great ! I have seen them both, Twilight more times than I can count. I have read all four books and loved them all enough to reread them over and over. as for the things you have to say about Breaking Dawn you could not be more wrong. It is an awesome book from start to finish! I understand what they say opinions are like, and well your making one of yourself no offence..If you did not like it thats fine but to write your one sided review well that hardly seems fair does it? I am a 41 year old Mother of four and this is the best love story I have read or
watched. I hope they Do make Breaking Dawn and I am sure it will be great .

This book was so great except for the anticlimactic ending. But it wouldn't be the same if the twilight saga didn't go through to the end. who ever did this review is a hater for sure. I absolutely loved this book and hated the series to end. Can't wait to see Renesme and how Jacob is with her, How beautiful Bella will look being immortal and the whole scene with the Volturi and Bella's powers will be awesome. I don't know I think it will be awesome and can't wait to see it.
