For an unpretentious indie comedy about a bunch of Star Wars nerds, Fanboys has generated an impressive amount of controversy. The movie, written and directed by Kyle Newman, first garnered interest in the online community when it screened to raves at last year's Comic-Con. But when distributor Weinstein Co. attempted to re-cut Fanboys and excise the flick's infamous "cancer" storyline, outraged fans issued petitions and threatened to boycott future Weinstein offerings.
The nerds prevailed. And at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, some of them will get a chance to witness the fruits of their victory. The Weinstein Co. announced today that an exclusive screening of Fanboys (the cancer version) will be held at the Convention Center on July 24th, with free tickets handed out to the first 300 people in line at the Lucasfilm’s 7th Annual Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge Awards.
I'm sure the line is already forming.
