David Gordon Green, whose diverse directing resume includes both Pineapple Express and All the Real Girls, has signed on to direct the horror thriller Freaks of the Heartland.
Green had been talking about remaking Suspiria with rumors of Natalie Portman as the star, but today's news likely indicates the Argento remake will be placed on the back burner for now.
Freaks is a horror thriller based on the graphic novel by Steve Niles, whose 30 Days of Night was adapted into last year's sleeper hit starring Josh Hartnett and Ben Foster. Freaks of the Heartland is based on a six-part series about a rural middle American town in which children are trying to protect their monster friends from their parents.
