S. Abraham Ravid, a professor of finance at Rutgers, has spent the last ten years studying star impact on box office performance. His conclusion: "Star participation has no statistical correlation with the success of a movie, no matter how you define 'a star' or how you define 'success.' " He also adds, "Good screenplays drive good movies." Even so, we're thankful for stars. They'd be busier, sure, but also much less aesthetically appealing.
