Frank Miller's homage to comics legend Will Eisner bombed big-time over the holiday weekend with a poor 9th place performance, making only $6.5 million.
That really hurts the first-time director who, it was just announced, is slated to direct the Buck Rogers movie. For Miller's sake, his street cred for previous hits like Sin City and 300 will hopefully protect him from Hollywood's practice of dumping directors of box office bombs.
The Spirit earned an average of $2,595 per screen compared with Marley and Me's $10,632.
The takeaway: Cute puppies and cute couples sold better than superheroes over the holidays.
