  • The Ugly Truth Reviews: Rom-Com Delivers on Modest Goals

The Ugly TruthThe Ugly Truth looks like the output of a movie factory: Put two of Hollywood's biggest stars (Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler) in a romantic comedy and set to "cute." Voila! $100M grosser!

6"The ugly truth is that it's the ultimate chick-flick cliché."

    — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

6"Even though the picture sputters and stumbles, it arrives at the ending that audiences crave."

    — Stephen Farber, Hollywood Reporter

6"...an arch, contrived, entirely predictable romantic comedy assembled with sufficient audience-friendly elements to put it over as both a good girls' night attraction and a date-night lure raunchy enough to leave couples in the right mood afterward."

    — Todd McCarthy, Variety

I am mystified as to why reviewers have such a tough time with romantic comedies. Of course, they are predictable. It may be that very predictability that is the appeal.

The wonder of the rom-com is the joy we have in taking the trip to the inevitable predictable conclusion. And, we don't mind that conclusion if the trip is enjoyable enough to provide enough laughs, suspense, poignancy and let's face it - eye candy.

So far, I've seen this movie 3 times and will no doubt see it a few more. It was fast-paced, very funny if a bit off-color and just charming.
