Following the incredible success of his film Titanic, James Cameron traded the bright lights of Hollywood for the bio-luminescent glow of deep-sea creatures. The director spent nearly a decade making documentary films in the depths of the ocean and developing the 3-D Fusion Camera System that is making the teaser footage of his latest theatrical release, Avatar, look so spectacular.
Apparently, Cameron hasn't had his fill of the deep. He's producing the underwater 3-D drama Sanctum, directed by Alister Grierson from a script by Andrew Wight and John Garvin. The movie was inspired by an actual near-death experience Wight had while diving in underwater caves. Sanctum will begin filming later this year in Australia and is currently slated for a 2010 release.
