Columbia Pictures and The Weinstein Co. are currently battling in a Canadian court to determine who owns the rights to produce a sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the Chinese martial arts epic that grossed over $200 million worldwide in 2000, reports the L.A. Times.
Why Canada? That's where Hong Wang, son of deceased Crouching Tiger novelist Wang Du Lu, resides. Hong Wang and his Beijing-based sister Qin Wang control the rights to their father's novels.
The case promises to be challenging one for both parties involved, as studio attorneys will be making their arguments to a jury of Canadian citizens largely unfamiliar with such modern concepts as "moving pictures" and "electricity."
