One of the greatest war films ever made. It gives a real portrayal of the German Nazi War machine. It was made just before the U.S. entered World War II, and gives a glimpse of Canada going into the war.
There is propoganda, but it is true to the times, and gives a more realistic account than we ever got of the Nazis. Instead of following six heroes through enemy territory, we follow the six surviving German soldiers of a sunken U Boat in Hudson Bay. The characters are extremely real, and all six give a real glimpse into the mind set of the German soldiers. One is an aristocrat, one a true idealistic Nazi Athiest (which was the Nazi idealogy), one is a brutal killer, one is a baker caught who represents the nobler German, one is a career soldier, and one is an opportunist.
Great scenes, and the most pivotal ones are the ones in the religious community, which includes the great tear jerker scene ever in any movie.
