  • A welcome glimpse into Coppola's Darkness

Coppola and DuvallIn an awards season filled with underwhelming movies inspired by the War in Iraq, it's fitting that the documentary Hearts of Darkness, Eleanor Coppola's superb account of her husband Francis's grueling Apocalypse Now experience, finally arrived on DVD last week.

With remarkable honesty, Hearts of Darkness chronicles the baffling array of disasters -- from the tsunami that destroyed its set to the heart attack that almost killed its star -- that plagued what is considered by many to be the finest war movie ever made. It's also an unprecedented look at a director perpetually teetering on the verge of madness in his effort to explain a war that largely defies explanation.

If you're a fan of Apocalypse Now or simply a fan of filmmaking in general, Hearts of Darkness is a definite must-see.
