44-year-old actress Demi Moore lashed out against ageism in the movie industry in a recent interview with the U.K.-based Red magazine, complaining that "There aren't that many good roles for women over 40. A lot of them don't have much substance, other than being someone's mother or wife."
Despite tour de force performances in such instant classics as Striptease, G.I. Jane and Passion of Mind, Moore's career has inexplicably experienced a sharp downturn in recent years, a development that can only logically be attributed to Hollywood's disdain for actresses in their 40s.
A look at last year's Best Actress Oscar nominees boosts Moore's argument. Just look at the ages of the five nominees: Helen Mirren (52), Meryl Streep (58), Judi Dench (72), Penelope Cruz (33) and Kate Winslet (31). Not a 40-something in the group. Shame on you, Hollywood.
