Does Harry have the stuff to take down Optimus Prime and his band of shape-shifting robots? It's muggles vs. fanboys at the Cineplex this weekend as Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix battles Transformers for box office supremacy.
A rundown of our reviews of this weekend's new releases:
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
"Has an overzealous script that tries--nobly--to keep as closely as possible to the book but then results in a long, not entirely exciting movie." [Full Review]
Talk to Me
"Ultimately it's Don Cheadle's performance, as well as those of co-stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Taraji P. Henson, that rescue the film from drowning in a sea of clichés." [Full Review]
Rescue Dawn
"A nice piece of alternative summer fare for those who might not be thrilled about giant robots, cooking rats or explosions in general." [Full Review]
Interview
"Interview is predominantly a two-character piece, with Buscemi and Miller sparring for the longest 83 minutes of my life." [Full Review]
Also opening this weekend: Captivity and My Best Friend.

Forget Transformers, the real must-see movie this Independence Day is Rescue Dawn, a war drama about a fighter pilot named Dieter Dengler who was captured and ultimately escaped from a Laotian prison camp during the Vietnam War. I saw this movie a few months ago and it is still with me. It is powerful, sad, and most of all, pretty accurate--which you'll find quite disturbing.
The always-talented Christian Bale (Batman Begins, American Psycho) is wonderful as usual as the irrepressible Dengler, and Jeremy Davies (Spanking the Monkey, Saving Private Ryan) is Holocaust-survivor thin and Charles-Manson crazy as his co-prisoner. But the best part may be getting to see the criminally underused Steve Zahn (Reality Bites, Saving Silverman) show off his remarkably ample acting chops.
Rescue Dawn opens in very limited release this Independence Day, with a national roll out to follow later in the month. Whether you can see it now or you have to wait a week or two, it should definitely be at the top of your "to see" list.
