Director D.J. Caruso's big screen adaptation of the critically-acclaimed graphic novel series Y: The Last Man seemed like the perfect vehicle for rising star Shia LaBeouf, especially since the two had already worked together on Eagle Eye and Disturbia. However, LaBeouf, rumored to have been offered the role of title character Yorick Brown, recently told Wizard magazine that the role is too similar to his Transformers character, Sam Witwicky:
You take Sam and you put a monkey on his shoulder. I don't know if it's that big a differential. It seems like he's the ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation again.
The "monkey" LaBeouf refers to is Ampersand, Yorick Brown's pet Capuchin monkey. In Y: The Last Man, Yorick and Ampersand are the only two mammals possessing a Y chromosome to survive a mysterious plague that sweeps the planet.
It's unclear why the film adaptation, originally scheduled to begin filming in the fall of 2008, has been delayed, but LaBeouf said:
I'm not willing to make that movie currently and may be too old to play the role by the time it does come around.
LaBeouf's next film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, opens nationwide June 24.

It was a slow weekend at the cineplex, with movie fans apparently saving up for the May 4th release of Spider-Man 3. Newly-crowned box office heavyweight Shia LaBeouf's Disturbia led the box office for the third week in a row with a tally of $9.1 million, according to boxofficemojo.com. Teenage supernatural thriller The Invisible led new releases with $7.6 million, while Nicolas Cage's Next limped to a disappointing $7.2 million tally. Rounding out the top five were Fracture and Blades of Glory, which took in $7 million and $5.2 million, respectively.

Can anyone stop the box office juggernaut that is Shia LaBeouf? His Rear Window remake Disturbia topped the box office for the second week in a row with a tally of $13.5 million, according to boxofficemojo.com, continuing its improbable run.
The courtroom thriller Fracture took in $11.2 million to lead all new releases. Blades of Glory once again led all comedies with a tally of $7.8 million, while the lightly-publicized horror flick Vacancy raked in just $7.6 million. Rounding out the top five with a $7 million take was Meet the Robinsons.
Opening in just 825 theaters, our beloved Hot Fuzz took in $5.8 million -- a whopping $7,075 per theater average. Look for Hot Fuzz to get a wider release soon.

Looks like their new Indy 4 star Shia LaBeouf can open a movie after all. LaBeouf's Rear Window remake Disturbia took the top spot in this weekend's box office tally, raking in $23 million, according to boxofficemojo.com. The news wasn't nearly as good for the rest of this weekend's new releases, as holdovers Blades of Glory and Meet the Robinsons took second and third place with $14 million and $12 million, respectively. Halle Berry's thriller Perfect Stranger came in fourth with a disappointing $11.5 million take. Rounding out the top five was Ice Cube's family flick Are We Done Yet?, which made $9.2 million.

Disturbia star Shia LaBeouf confirmed via USA Today that he has indeed signed on for the as yet untitled fourth Indiana Jones film, confirming weeks of speculation across the internets.
LaBeouf maintains that his previous claims of ignorance were sincere: "When I was saying, 'I don't know anything,' I didn't know anything."
LaBeouf didn't divulge details about his character, but many believe he will be playing Indy's son. Methinks the role will primarily involve LaBeouf pushing a cranky Indiana Jones around in a wheelchair as he searches his nursing home for the fabled Lost Container of Metamucil.
