Tis the final DVD Tuesday before Christmas and a plethora of new releases have arrived, just in time to serve as handy stocking stuffers for the movie lovers in your household. Summer blockbuster The Simpsons Movie sits atop the list, followed by Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween, Matthew Vaughn's fantasy adventure Stardust, Jason Lee's live-action/CGI Disney flick Underdog and Dan Fogler's ping pong comedy Balls of Fury.
Our DVD pick this week is Braveheart Special Collector's Edition, featuring a beautiful, digitally remastered version of the last great pre-CGI epic. Freeeeeeeeedom!!!

In a bizarre ad campaign for the upcoming movie, Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, which opens nationwide on November 16th, The Los Angeles Times will feature the first ever ad using scented ink, which smells like frosted cake.
The ad will debut in the paper's annual Fall Movie Sneaks section on September 9th.
I'm glad no one thought of this idea for Balls of Fury.

Movie lovers looking to hit the Cineplex this weekend should proceed with caution, as a trio of mediocre flicks arrive in theaters: one unfunny comedy (Balls of Fury) and two unintentionally funny non-comedies (Halloween and Death Sentence). Pick your poison.
A rundown of our reviews of this weekend's new releases:
Halloween
"Zombie’s direction and storytelling are extremely uneven...an utterly pointless endeavor." [Full Review]
Balls of Fury
"All of the funniest moments were in the trailier -- and the trailer wasn't funny." [Full Review]
Death Sentence
"Grows progressively more ridiculous with each successive scene...the funniest unintentional comedy of the year!" [Full Review]
Also opening this weekend: Ladron que Roba a Ladron, The Nines, Self-Medicated.

Well then let this handy rant guide steer you clear of the dog days of summer. The movies at your local theater may suck, but the better choices are out there. You just have to look a little harder for them.
Don't let Mr. Bean take you for a ride! That's a Death Sentence. Halloween doesn't come in August. Your brother Jim is funnier than the Brothers Solomon. The only Fury you'll feel from these Balls is the one brought on by your lighter wallet. The Invasion came and no one noticed. It's less of a War and more of a snore.
Bring on the Dog Days of the movie season!
Next Showing: Plenty of lame movies are now playing at your local theater.
