This 3-D visual dazzler starts out slowly but gradually builds up steam.

As the number of portable and home movie-viewing options continues to multiply, many folks in Hollywood openly fret about the future of the Cineplex, with the more pessimistic among them all but predicting its imminent demise. With that in mind, studios and theater owners alike continue to scramble for new ways to get more butts into the seats.

The folks at Disney may have found reason to be optimistic. They used their latest animated flick, Meet the Robinsons, as an opportunity to show off the brand spankin’ new “Stereoscopic” 3-D system. An eye-popping innovation light years ahead of the awful, headache-inducing 3-D from days of old, it’s ultimately what elevates Meet the Robinsons from ordinary to exceptional.

Based upon the children’s book “A Day with Wilbur Robinson,” by William Joyce, Meet the Robinsons tells the tale of Lewis, a precocious orphan with prodigious scientific skills and a knack for inventing. Longing to meet his birth mother, Lewis travels through time in an effort to uncover the truth about his origins.

Meet the Robinsons starts out slowly, both in terms storyline and visuals. (Which is ironic for a movie whose central motto is “keep moving forward.”) The movie eventually picks up steam, however, once Lewis arrives in the future (the bright, art deco vision of the future envisaged in Meet the Robinsons is truly a treat to behold), and continues to accelerate towards a rousing finish, complete with a message that will resonate with children and adults alike. It’s not quite on par with The Incredibles, but it’s a surefire sign that the beleaguered Disney Animation group is back and once again ready to compete with the titans of animation.
