• Fox flicks coming to iTunes

  Looks like Homer Simpson, the Silver Surfer and others might soon be coming to an iPod near you. London's Financial Times reports today that Fox, the studio behind The Simpsons Movie and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, has struck a deal with Apple to offer customers users the opportunity to rent its movies using the popular iTunes service. No word yet on how much rentals will cost or how long they'll last before expiring. Those and other details of the pact will likely be revealed at the biannual MacWorld expo in San Francisco, which kicks off on January 14th.

  Headlining today's new DVD releases are Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and the surprise hit 1408. Also arriving in stores today are indie flicks Jindabyne and Civic Duty.

  Our personal pick this week is the 40th Anniversary edition of the Disney animated classic The Jungle Book.

• Weekend Box Office Report

  Since when is a $32 million opening weekend and a number one ranking at the box office considered a disappointment? That's the question facing the producers of Evan Almighty this morning, as the sequel to Bruce Almighty took in less than half of what its predecessor earned over the same time period four years ago, despite a budget rumored to be over $200 million.

  John Cusack's horror flick 1408 proved a pleasant surprise, coming in second with a $20.2 million take, according to boxofficemojo.com, while Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer trailed closely behind at $20.15 million in its second week of release. Rounding out the top five were Ocean's Thirteen and Knocked Up, which earned $11.3 million and $10.6 million, respectively.

• Box Office Report

  As expected, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer dominated the weekend box office, raking in $57 million and placing well ahead of runner-up Ocean's Thirteen, which managed just a $19 million gross in its second week of release, boxofficemojo.com reports.

  The weekend's other new release, Nancy Drew, didn't fare nearly as well, limping to a $7 million take and finishing outside of the top five.

  Knocked Up continued its strong run, placing third overall with a $14 million tally. Its 26% drop-off was by far the smallest of all major releases.  

  Rounding out the top five were Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and Surf's Up, which took in $12 million and $9 million, respectively.

• Philatelists, comic fans finally have cause for small talk

  As part of a promotion for the upcoming Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, 20th Century Fox joined up with the Franklin Mint to release a Silver Surfer quarter.

  Oh yes, you read that right. The quarter, which has an image of the Silver Surfer on one side, is valid U.S. currency. In fact, reports Variety.com, 40,000 of the quarters have already been released upon the American public--courtesy special silver armored trucks.

  While collectible coins aren't totally unheard of in the comic book geek universe, it's not so common for them to be actual valid currency.

  Thus, for those who find themselves in possession of one of these rare beasts, be advised: you might not want to just toss them into the vending machine for another Fanta. At present, the Silver Surfer quarters are going for a between roughly $20 and $40 each on eBay.

  Or you can go to the movie's website (fantasticfourmovie.com) and take part in the Search 4 Silver campaign--which has prizes such as special screenings and a trip for four to the movie's world premiere in London.
