Can lightning strike twice? Or is Apatow going to hit the sophomore slump?

Knocked Up is writer/director Judd Apatow's long-awaited, highly-hyped follow-up to his breakthrough 2005 hit The 40-Year-Old-Virgin. And the question on everyone's lips is: Can it possibly live up to the standard that Virgin set? Was it just a fluke, or is Apatow a comic force to be reckoned with?

Well Apatow fans, you can let out your sigh of relief now. Because I can tell you in no uncertain terms that yes indeed, Knocked Up is every bit as funny asHeigl & Rogen in Knocked Up The 40-Year-Old Virgin. There is no sophomore slump in sight.

Of course, anyone who has followed Apatow's career probably won't be surprised. After all, he wrote and directed the critically-acclaimed (although short-lived) TV show Freaks and Geeks, wrote for The Larry Sanders Show, and perhaps most tellingly, was a producer on Anchorman and Talladega Nights. So it shouldn't come as a shocker that Apatow is a talented director--he's directing his own work, after all.

Knocked Up tells the story of Ben and Alison. Ben (Seth Rogen) is a good-hearted slacker who is trying to get a pornographic website off the ground with his equally mediocre friends. Mostly, they just all sit around their dirty, Salvation-Army-esque bachelor pad smoking pot and cracking dirty jokes at one another.

One night, Ben meets the beautiful Alison (Katherine Heigl) at a Los Angeles club where she has gone with her sister to celebrate her promotion at work. One thing leads to another and 8 weeks later, Alison discovers her one-night stand with the shlubby but funny Ben has left her pregnant. Incredibly, the two decide to make a go of it for the baby's sake, but can such an ill-fated couple really last?

It is to Apatow's credit that a storyline so devoid of surprises (hello, the movie is called Knocked Up) can be so fun and engaging to watch. This is largely because the man simply knows funny when he sees it, and he gives his actors' ample opportunity to plumb all possible comic depths.

In describing Apatow's approach to filmmaking, Rogen quoted Harold Ramis (who has a cameo as Ben's father in Knocked Up), who said of his own approach to Ghostbusters: "the script is the worst case scenario. The script is what we have if we can't think of anything better." That is to say, Apatow encourages his actors to improv, and has no qualms about running the camera for hours on a single scene if it means getting the best footage. Not that, I suspect, the original scripts themselves are too shabby. But by casting great comedic actors and giving them their head, Apatow winds up with a product with humor that is head and shoulders above nearly everything else out there.

Apatow's dedication extends to even the smallest characters in Knocked Up; the ample cameos and supporting roles (like Alison's bosses, Jack and Jill, played by Alan Tudyk and Kristen Wiig) are all given their chance to shine. As a result, Knocked Up is a funny, rich movie with characterization that is Heigl & Mann in Knocked Upatypically deep for what is essentially a bawdy comedy.

Heigl (Grey's Anatomy, Caffeine) is a newcomer to Apatow's pack, but she holds her own. Rogen is absolutely perfect casting for his part, and Leslie Mann (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Big Daddy) and Paul Rudd (Clueless, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) are wonderful as Alison's sister and brother-in-law with the married relationship no one would ever want to emulate. But I think my favorite part may be the interactions between Rogen's and Rudd's characters; two totally different people, they become unlikely friends when thrust into this odd situation by the baby-to-be. And the result is as funny as it is heart-warming.

I could go on forever about all the things I liked about Knocked Up, but why? Did I like it as much as The 40-Year-Old Virgin? Almost, but not quite, although that may be because I'm just a sucker for Steve Carell's ability to bring humility to even the silliest of his characters. The bottom line is that Knocked Up is an ambient, funny movie more devoted to enjoying the journey of its characters' world than it is bothered with its destination. It is also hysterical, fun and totally worth the trip to the theater.

  • Knocked Up boosts business in an unlikely area

Anyone who has seen Knocked Up knows that Seth Rogen and is band of slacker buddies' dream of building a website with images of Hollywood nude scenes is ruined when that they've been beaten to the punch by Mr.Skin.com.

What you may not realize is how much Mr. Skin's website benefitted from its mention in the movie.  Mr.Skin.com experienced a 35% increase in new traffic during June (the month that Knocked Up hit theaters). That's a total of 2.9 million unique visitors.

Not that the site wasn't doing well already--Mr.Skin grossed $5.3 million in 2006. But it looks like tickling Judd Apatow's funnybone is beneficial in more ways than one.

  • Seth Rogen going Green

Seth RogenKnocked Up star Seth Rogen has signed on with Columbia Pictures to write and "likely" star in a big-screen adaptation of The Green Hornet, The Los Angeles Times reports.

If and when Rogen's version of The Green Hornet makes it to the big screen, it will be quite an accomplishment for the Judd Apatow protege. Hollywood's been trying to get a Hornet film made for years without any success, despite the apparently insatiable consumer demand for comic book-related properties. Most recently, Clerks director Kevin Smith was attached to write and direct for Miramax, but the project went nowhere and Smith eventually moved on.

The Green Hornet began as a radio show in the '30s, chronicling the adventures of Britt Reid, a wealthy newspaper publisher by day and costumed crime-fighter at night. The character eventually branched out to other media, including film, television and comic books, with varying degrees of success. The short-lived '60s TV series is notable for introducing American audiences to a young Bruce Lee, who played the Hornet's badass sidekick Kato.

Columbia is said to be hoping for a 2009 release for The Green Hornet.

  • Weekend Box Office: America Skips Torture For Vegas, Baby!

Early weekend numbers are showing that Ocean' Thirteen will be landing at number one for the weekend Box Office, proving the old Vegas adage that the house (or A-list star, in this case) always wins. Friday estimates have Ocean's leading with an estimated $12.4 million while Pirates 3 and Knocked Up placed in second and third respectively, both with just over $6 million.

Some speculations had Eli Roth's brutal Hostel Part II competing for top honors, but after a disappointing Friday take of an estimated $3.37 million, America may well be losing its taste for the torture-driven horror genre.

Check back on ReelzChannel.com for final numbers this Monday.

  • Seth Rogen talks Superbad

This is what your baby is going to look likeAt a recent press junket for Knocked Up, its star, Seth Rogen gave a little taste of what he's got in store with his next movie, the long-awaited Superbad.

"I think it just kind of was born out of a desire to see teen characters that are a lot like what [co-writer Evan Goldberg and I] were like when we were in high school," said Rogen.

He and Goldberg started writing the comedy, about two high school social rejects who go to a graduation party and impress their crushes, when they were just 14.

"We were teenagers in Vancouver. There was no real implication that it would ever get made into anything, it was just to amuse ourselves," the self-deprecating actor explained. "Unfortunately, really filthy filthy jokes is what amuses us, so that's what we wrote."

Rogen says Superbad is a return to movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, because it shows things like, in the MPAA's words "pervasive crude and sexual content, strong language, drinking, some drug use and a fantasy/comic violent image - all involving teens."

    Sounds awesome.

Next Showing: Superbad hits theaters August 17, 2007.

  • Get Knocked Up online

To get fans amped up for their upcoming summer blockbuster Knocked Up (aka Judd Apatow's follow up to The 40-Year-Old Virgin), our friends at Universal have put together quite a fancy website.

The Knocked Up website has all sorts of features for fans who just can't wait for the movie to reach full term, including The Edit Bay (additional movie clips, deleted scenes, Apatow's Director's Video Diary, etc.), Freebies (a free ticket to Knocked Up for those who buy the all-new unrated Double Your Pleasure edition of The 40-Year-Old Virgin), and more.Little Heather Junior

My favorite? Easily the Knocked Up Baby-Maker. You just upload pix of you and whomever you want and it will whip you up a potential future baby. It's very easy. I took a stab at it with a picture of my husband and myself, and suffice it to say, I will be filing for divorce in the morning.

You can visit the Knocked Up website at KnockedUpMovie.com.

Next Showing: Knocked Up is due in theaters June 1, 2007.
