Ethan Hawke goes behind the camera for the film adaptation of his 1997 debut novel The Hottest State. The screenplay, which he also wrote, follows the story of the explosive first love of Will (Mark Webber) young New York actor, for the untameable Sara (Catalina Sandino Moreno). The film is perfectly fine indie fare, but the plot and the characters seem a little more self-indulgently autobiographical than compelling. No matter how much Hawke tries to protest that the story is more fiction than fact, though, true Hawke fans will know better. And it is for those who want to glean some insight into the actor's pre-Uma days that The Hottest State holds the most rewards.

  • The Time to Rejoice is Upon Us

Ethan Hawke fans - unite! The man who makes greasy hair inexplicably appealing is bringing his novel, The Hottest State, to celluloid this summer.

True Hawke-lovers such as myself will join me in recalling his first foray into the world of literature during the post-Reality Bites pre-Uma part of his career. While becoming a published author may have seemed a bit foolhardy and egocentric at the time, I actually read The Hottest State and thought it wasn't half bad.

According to one of my summer movie preview press releases, my dear sweet Ethan adapted The Hottest State into a movie that he directed and starred in, along with Laura Linney and Michelle Williams.

I don't know about you, but this news makes me feel like a twentysomething again.

Next Showing: The Hottest State hits theaters on August 24, 2007.
