This was... not that bad actually, I actually found myself laughing out loud at some parts. I thought it was going to be another Mandy Moore chick flick ala "Because I Said So". Mandy Moore plays a borderline psychotic woman about to get married to her boyfriend. While in the movie everyone places the blame on the boyfriend I found Mandy Moore's character to be very overbearing and hypocritical. John Krasinski really should find a nice serious drama to star in to recover from this movie. Robin Williams was very interesting and actually wasn't as horrific as the trailers seemed to suggest. He was actually very insightful to the couple and while he was trying to tear them apart what does not kill you only makes you stronger I guess.

Everything you need to know about this movie is in the poster--and it's not good.

I know it isn't the most popular sentiment these days amongst either the film geek or the comedy communities, but I’m a Robin Williams fan. A huge one. IWilliams, Krasinski, and Moore know it's fashionable to consider him common, but I don't care. As I was saying just the other day, I've loved him since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, and patterns that old just aren't going anywhere.

So when I saw the billboards for License to Wed, I was concerned. You've seen it - A disturbed-looking John Krasinski (The Office) and Mandy Moore(Saved!, Because I Said So) are lying in bed, with a be-collared, cat-who-ate-the-canary-grinning Robin Williams lying between them. This poster was one of those rare images that in the advertising trade we called "fast" - it says everything you need to know in one look: A cute young couple wants to get married and Robin Williams is the madcap clergyman who stands in their way. It also says "comedy" that while ostensibly is a vehicle for Williams to do what he's best at, will probably be dull. Oh, how I wish this were a case of false advertising.

In License to Wed, Sadie Jones (Moore) and Ben Murphy (Krasinski) are a young engaged couple who want to get married at Jones's family church. There's only one problem - the eccentric Reverend Frank (Williams) who lords over the church (ha) requires that all couples complete his marriage prep course before consenting to wed them. And with Williams at the helm, you can imagine that this course is going to be more than a little unorthodox. Do the young lovers have what it takes to make it through worse before they get to better?

Sadly, License to Wed lived up to my expectations 100%. That is to say, it was unfunny and uninspired. It's not the actors' faults - they're all fine. Director Ken Kwapis (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Office) does as good a job as can be expected with this drip of a Moore, Krasinski and robo-babyscript, making Moore come off a lot better than she did a few months ago in Because I Said So. It takes a few minutes to get over seeing Krasinski in a role other than Jim on The Office - he is just so ingrained as that character in my consciousness. It's especially jarring when he kisses Moore.

But the true tragedy of the screenplay (by Kim Barker and Tim Rasmussen) is that it takes the humor that has made Williams so popular and turns it into something predictable and uninspired. It is just such a waste. Sure, there are some mildly amusing bits. Kwapis snuck in several of Kransinski's Office castmates for cameos - although those take you out of the story as much as they enhance it. And Williams' creepy choir boy sidekick (Josh Flitter) is all right. But by and large, License to Wed is so dull that, and I’m not exaggerating, the only time I laughed at all was during the gag-reel of outtakes during the ending credits. A sampling of my notes? "So cliché I could die" and "Ending making me barf."

All this said, I'm sure Williams' star power will draw some die-hard fans to the theaters. And I'm also sure that there is a portion of them that will find this movie funny. I'm just not one of them.
