Twilight leading lady Kristen Stewart has swapped her brown pants and long hair for skinny jeans and a black mullet, in order to play seventies rock icon Joan Jett in The Runaways. Talking to British newspaper The Daily Mail, Stewart said:
I'm just listening to her music all the time. I'm trying to just make myself aware of the time period and what she was going through. It's one of the most immense responsibilities to play a real person. Her story's important. It's an incredibly triumphant feminist story really.
Wow, is that enthusiasm we see? It looks like Stewart has finally found a project to her liking, and it's one that doesn't include vampires, teen romance, or Robert Pattinson. Stewart and the real Joan Jett have already been spotted at a recording studio together, no doubt perfecting Stewart's voice, which was last heard in Into the Wild. It's a good job New Moon filming has wrapped, or Bella would be looking more rock 'n' roll than Stephenie Meyer ever intended her to.

Into the Wild, Sean Penn's searing true story of Christopher McCandless and his eye-opening Alaskan journey, leads this week's crop of new DVD releases. Also debuting on home video are the comic fantasy Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, the Halle Berry/Benicio Del Toro drama Things We Lost in the Fire and the Hayden Christensen/Jessica Alba thriller Awake.
Our pick for this week is the 50th anniversary edition of 12 Angry Men, Sidney Lumet's classic tale of a jury tasked with deciding the fate of a young man charged with murder.

The powers that be in Palm Springs are announcing this year's honorees. Sean Penn will receive the Director of the Year award for his work on Into the Wild. Previous director honorees include Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Ang Lee, which means that acknowledgement of this sort heavily favors Penn for getting a Best Director nod come Oscar time.
Marion Cotillard will be receiving the Breakthrough Performance Award for La Vie en Rose, and Nikki Blonsky (Hairspray) and Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) will be receiving the Rising Star awards.
The 19th annual Palm Springs Film Festival will take place from Jan. 3-14, 2008. The awards will be given out at a gala on January 5.

The 34th Telluride Film Festival kicks off today with the world premiere of I'm Not There, Todd Haynes' star-studded tribute to Bob Dylan. The quirky biopic features Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Julianne Moore and other heavyweights providing their own impersonations of the scruffy, often incomprehensible folk legend.
Other films on the fest's slate include Oscar contenders Into the Wild, Margot at the Wedding and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
Telluride will also be paying tribute to ReelzChannel's own Leonard Maltin. The legendary critic and Secret's Out host will be presented the Medallion Award, honoring "passionate heroes of cinema." Congrats Leonard!
