Trailer
Diggers is an ensemble comedy set in 1976 on the south shore of Long Island. The independent clam diggers there are facing an end of their way of life as a big company threatens to run them out of their jobs. Quirky hilarity ensues.
The ample cast includes: Paul Rudd (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Clueless) as artistic, soulful digger Hunt; Maura Tierney (ER, Forces of Nature) as his restless, sexual revolutionary sister; Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under, Can't Hardly Wait) as the hip, Blondie-like Manhattanite that catches Hunt's eye; Ken Marino (Wet Hot American Summer, Tortilla Soup) as a crass, hard-drinking digger with a big family to feed; Sarah Paulson (Down With Love, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip) as his long-suffering wife; Ron Eldard (Black Hawk Down, Freedomland) as town Cassanova digger; and Josh Hamilton (Kicking and Screaming, The House of Yes) as the pot-dealing hippie digger.
Written by Ken Marino and directed by Katherine Dieckmann (A Good Baby), Diggers is all shell and no neck and belly. Although there are funny moments, its story drifts and ambles, and ultimately the movie feels flat. Not to mention that hearing several rather intellectual actors trying to affect a working class Long Island accent and failing is kind of painful. And no amount of majestic mustaches and albeit ample 70's nostalgia trips can change that.
