When an Egyptian-born, but highly Americanized chemical engineer Anwar El-Ibrahmi (Omar Metwally) is taken taken into secret custody in by the CIA under suspicion of involvement in terrorist activities, his wife (Reese Witherspoon) fights to find him and the case officer assigned (Jake Gyllenhaal) struggles to stomach the government-prescribed torture to which he must subject him. A political ensemble drama about the ripple effect from a terrorist incident in North Africa, Rendition falls squarely in the realm of compatriots like Babel and Traffic--mostly good, some storylines more compelling than others, and some serious flaws. Directed by Gavin Hood (Tsotsi), Rendition, Rendition features decent performances by all its actors, although few are given any chance to shine. Though its a smaller part, Meryl Streep not surprisingly nails the role of CIA Counterterrorism Head Corinne Whitman and Gyllenhaal is a sympathetic window into the perilous predicament of balancing the need for information and with humanity. But it is relative unknown Metwally (Munich) who really stands head and shoulders above the rest in the gruelling torture scenes. Rendition does start to slow down toward the middle, and the neat little bow of an ending detracts from its promise by making it seem more like a social message platitude than a film for thought. But still, is it worth a trip to the theater? Maybe so.
