Saw the movie in theaters. I knew it was going to be stupid, but my mom wanted to see it. I did to at first, but then I heard how dumb it was. Neither of us liked it.

From my vantage point, this movie's terrible.

Send him to GuantanamoVantage Point is a fairly standard political thriller told in a fairly novel fashion. The story begins with a pivotal event -- an attempted Presidential assassination -- and revisits it from several different perspectives, each time revealing a crucial detail designed to help move the plot along. The idea doesn't lack for promise -- sure, the Rashomon thing's been done before, but mostly in independent flicks made by would-be auters, not in big budget, effects-heavy studio action flicks.

Dennis Quaid stars as a Secret Service agent returning to duty after a year spent recovering from wounds sustained during a previous attempt on the President (played by William Hurt). And wouldn't you know it, on his first day back on the job those pesky terrorists strike again. This time they succeed, putting two bullets in the President's chest during an appearance at a peace conference in Spain. Two powerful bomb blasts follow, plunging the scene into utter chaos.

From there, Vantage Point essentially becomes a murder mystery, but not before the aforementioned assassination attempt is replayed. And replayed again. And again. And...again. In addition to Quaid's version of the event, we see it from the viewpoint of a TV news producer (Sigourney Weaver), an American tourist (Forest Whitaker), a terrorist, local cop, a janitor, a pony, a housecat and a discarded gum wrapper. After each increasingly annoying replay, the clock is wound back and a time stamp appears in the lower left corner -- in 24-esque fashion -- to remind us that we're starting over. It's a severe, achingly tedious case of Rashomon overkill.

When Vantage Point finally dispenses with the overused gimmick and the stalled plot begins moving again-- almost an hour into the film -- it becomes genuinely interesting, but only for a brief while before a series of increasingly ridiculous plot twists send the movie overboard. Of course, describing said ridiculous plot twists would necessitate revealing some pretty gnarly spoilers, and I wouldn't dream of depriving you of the same experience that I enjoyed. Call me a sadist.

IT WAS OKAY BUT NOT GREAT. ITS WORTHY OF A DVD RENTAL BUT WAS A BIG DISSAPOINTMENT CONSIDERING ITS TOP DRAWER CAST. DENNIS QUAID WAS OUTSTANDING
IN A ROLE THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER SERVED IN ANOTHER MOVIE.

The movie was good, but not Unique, for a movie that uses the same cinematography as Vantage Point, go Watch the independent film, 11:14, It did a much better job, otherwise, I thought the movie was great, aside from a little bit of repetitiveness, it was suspenseful and overall a good movie.

  • Dennis Quaid gears up to play General Hawk in G.I. Joe

Dennis Quaid in Vantage PointGoing into production next week is the eagerly awaited live-action G.I. Joe flick, with Dennis Quaid headlining an (almost) all-star cast. At today's Vantage Point press day, the Enemy Mine star talked about playing Joe leader General Hawk:

"He's kind of a cross between Chuck Yeager, Sergeant Rock and maybe a naïve Hugh Hefner thrown in there," he joked. "General Hawk's aide-de-camp is a Victoria's Secret supermodel. I mean, how serious can it be?"

Quaid went on to say that the story will be set "a little bit in the future. In a way, the Joes are like this international, sort of special forces type of group that mainly fight these terrorist groups that spring up. The movie is more like James Bond, with the group being SPECTRE -- there's this evil mastermind that's behind it."

Speaking of evil masterminds, who will be playing Cobra Commander?

G.I. Joe is slated for an August 2009 release. Vantage Point opens nationwide on Friday, February 22nd.

  • Hurt talks Hulk

William HurtWhile promoting his latest flick, Sony's upcoming action thriller Vantage Point, star William Hurt (Mr. Brooks, A History of Violence) took time out to talk about his role in The Incredible Hulk, Louis Leterrier's upcoming re-boot of the Marvel franchise left dormant after 2003's disappointing Hulk:

"I'm General Ross, father of the paramour of Bruce (Banner) and the nemesis -- so-called conflicted nemesis -- of The Hulk," said Hurt. "He wants Hulk's power but is humiliated by Hulk's conscience, which he actually sees -- and occasionally recognizes -- is actually more developed than his own, even though he's a patriot and a warrior for his country. He's sacrificed immensely for that purpose, but at the expense of, at times, all of his humanity, which he occasionally recovers glimpses of."

As you might guess, General Ross is the flick's main villain. The Incredible Hulk opens nationwide June 13, 2008.
