Wahlberg and Duvall in We Own the NightWith We Own the Night, director James Gray (The Yards, Little Odessa) attempts to defy the current affinity for blustery crime dramas emphasizing brawn over brains, striving instead for a tone reminiscent of the classic cop flicks of the 1970s. Though the effort isn't entirely successful, Gray's film is nonetheless a solid, angst-ridden thriller.

Joaquin Phoenix stars as Bobby, the black sheep of a proud NYPD family. While his brother Joseph (Mark Wahlberg) and father Burt (Robert Duvall) are out fighting on the front lines of the late '80s drug wars, Bobby is riding high as the swaggering manager of a popular Brooklyn nightclub, squiring his hot girlfriend (played dutifully by Eva Mendes) around town and looking forward to a bright future.

The party ends abruptly for Bobby, however, when the cops discover that his nightclub is frequented by drug-dealing members of the Russian mafia. Forced by his brother and father to choose a side, Bobby fateful decision sets in motion a series of events that threaten to rob him of everything he once held dear.

It's tricky business, paying homage to classic cop movies while avoiding their many clichés, but for the most part We Own the Night walks the line nicely. Thanks in large part to strong performances from Phoenix, Wahlberg and Duvall, the movie is at its best when the focus is on the characters and the dilemmas they face. While Gray skillfully sprinkles the film with tension and suspense, including a rain-soaked chase scene that ranks among the genre's all-time best, he's ultimately hampered by a plot filled with too many implausible developments, too many convenient coincidences, too many lulls in the action.
