With the success of the Twilight Saga vampire movies are popular again, but the upcoming Daybreakers is far removed from a world where humans and vampires fall in love. Instead, vampires have taken over the earth and hunt the remaining humans for food. Only one problem exists: they're running out of humans. Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe star is this offshoot of I Am Legend. The movie doesn't open until January 8, 2010, which should give you plenty of time to digest the following trailer:

The election season may be over, but that hasn't stopped Will Smith from making a lot of bold promises. While out on the campaign trail this week to promote his upcoming Oscar-baiting drama Seven Pounds, Hollywood's top-earning actor set forth quite an ambitious agenda. Over the past few days, he:
Assured Collider that he has a "fantastic idea" for an I Am Legend prequel, involving the fall of Manhattan;
Promised JoBlo that we will "definitely" see a Hancock sequel in "a few years";
Hinted to Movieweb at the possibility of playing Barack Obama in a biopic, boasting that his ears make him a "lock" for the role; and
Bragged to Barbara Walters that there was "no question" he himself could get elected president, if he wanted to.
Next week, Smith reportedly plans to present his Comprehensive Unified Field Theory to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, at last bridging the gap between quantum physics and Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

When it comes to blockbuster tentpole flicks, Hollywood's modus operandi is to greenlight sequels almost immediately after the first receipts come in. But what happens when the highly-recognizable, virtually indispensable hero of said blockbuster eats it at the end of the movie? Such is the dilemma facing the producers of last year's unexpected megahit, I Am Legend. In an uncharacteristically brave move, they opted to kill off star Will Smith, a guy who just happens to be the most popular actor on the planet, in spectacular -- and thoroughly conclusive -- fashion at the end of Francis Lawrence's post-apocalyptic epic. (We'd put a "Spoiler Alert" here, but if you're one of the seven people in the country who hasn't seen I Am Legend, chances are you probably don't have internet access, either.)
Initial reports indicated that Warner Bros. intended to make an I Am Legend prequel -- seemingly the only realistic option available that would allow the studio to continue milking the franchise and not appear utterly shameless -- but now AICN is reporting (via an untested source, they caution) that they've changed course and that a sequel is indeed in the works.
If AICN's report is true, I Am Legend sequel producers have three explanations for bringing Smith back, according to standard Hollywood procedure: 1) Explain that it was all just one big, crazy dream; 2) Reveal that Smith's character, Robert Neville, has a previously unmentioned twin or clone; or 3) Have Smith only appear in flashbacks, Saw-style. Either way, we smell a hit.
What do you think the sequel should be called? Our suggestion: Live Free or I Am Legend.

Will Smith's post-apocalyptic blockbuster I Am Legend kicks off another epic DVD Tuesday. Other new releases include Disney's adorable fairytale spoof Enchanted, the Oscar-winning romantic drama Atonement, the unfortunately titled Love in the Time of Cholera and Guy Ritchie's mind-bending Kabbalah ad gangster flick Revolver.
Our pick for this week is Southland Tales, the sophomore effort from Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly, for its fascinating portrait of an art-house auteur working at the height of self-importance.

There's an interesting trend occuring this Holiday season at the movie house - instead of the usual heartwarming, happy holiday fare, many moviegoers are opting for a distinctly different experience at the cinema... Blood Shed.
Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem debuted on Christmas Day and rounded up an impressive $9.5 on Day 1. Our own Brent Simon was a bit underwhelmed - be sure to check out his Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem review. The post-apocalyptic I Am Legend is holding strong, on pace to hit $175 million in total box office this weekend while Tim Burton's blood-soaked Sweeney Todd is also continuing to perform well at the box office.
Finally, Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, the darkly operatic There Will Be Blood opened in very limited release this week, garnering a staggering per-screen average of nearly $34,000.

This year's box office received a sudden and welcome jolt this weekend courtesy of reigning box office champion Will Smith and three singing chipmunks.
I Am Legend turned out one of the year's biggest openings with a shocking $76 million estimated take over the weekend to top the box office. Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks was no slouch itself singing itself to a high-pitched $45 million estimate for second place.
New Line's Golden Compass continued to stumble through the holiday box office with an estimated $9 million for a very distant third place. The weekend's other new entry, Queen Latifah's The Perfect Holiday, scored a far from perfect $2.5 million.
Final numbers will be out tomorrow.

Will Smith's urban dystopia I Am Legend and Jason Lee's CGI/live-action family flick Alvin and the Chipmunks are this week's two major releases. Also opening are Youth Without Youth, Francis Ford Coppola's long-awaited return to the director's chair, and The Kite Runner, Marc Forster's controversial adaptation of the acclaimed novel.
A rundown of our reviews of this weekend's new releases:
I Am Legend
"Consistently entertaining from start to finish...Smith pulls off what so few actors have, keeping audiences engaged in his character’s plight with no one to play off of." [Full Review]
Alvin and the Chipmunks
"While entertaining in fits and inoffensive enough to serve as 90-minute Holiday diversion for the family, it's ultimately a hollow, trite, almost entirely humorless affair." [Full Review]
The Perfect Holiday
"Ho-ho-horrible." [Full Review]
The Kite Runner
"Entirely too epic for its own good...unless you're a die-hard fan desperate to see Hosseini's story on screen, The Kite Runner is probably a pass." [Full Review]
Also opening: Nanking, Goodbye Bafana, Youth Without Youth.
