The shockingly successful family flick Alvin and the Chipmunks leads off this week's DVD Tuesday, followed by Tim Burton's shockingly violent Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street -- available in both standard and 2-disc collector's editions. Also debuting on DVD are Jake Paltrow's (Gwyneth's less successful brother) directorial debut The Good Night and the Cuba Gooding Jr. comedy What Love Is.

MTV.com has an article up showing the younger cast of Sweeney Todd imagining a possible Sweeney Todd sequel--in which they are they main characters of course.
Let me just say, there is no way in the fires of Hell that there is going to be a Sweeney Todd sequel. At least not one by Tim Burton. That would just be the epitome of tastelessness.
Actually, it is possible that there could be some suits out there for whom this idea stirs up big, fat dollar signs in their eyes, but let's just say that if there ever were a Sweeney Todd sequel, there no way it could ever be good. So you young whippersnappers keep dreaming.

There's an interesting trend occuring this Holiday season at the movie house - instead of the usual heartwarming, happy holiday fare, many moviegoers are opting for a distinctly different experience at the cinema... Blood Shed.
Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem debuted on Christmas Day and rounded up an impressive $9.5 on Day 1. Our own Brent Simon was a bit underwhelmed - be sure to check out his Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem review. The post-apocalyptic I Am Legend is holding strong, on pace to hit $175 million in total box office this weekend while Tim Burton's blood-soaked Sweeney Todd is also continuing to perform well at the box office.
Finally, Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, the darkly operatic There Will Be Blood opened in very limited release this week, garnering a staggering per-screen average of nearly $34,000.

The box office appears poised to finish 2007 on a surprisingly high note, with National Treasure: Book of Secrets leading another strong weekend at the Cineplex.
On the heels of I Am Legend's impressive $76 million debut last week, Nicolas Cage's action/adventure sequel took in $45.5 million -- over $10 million more than its predecessor, 2004's National Treasure, made in its debut. Legend grabbed second place, continuing its impressive run with a $34 million gross in its second week in release, while talking animal comedy Alvin and the Chipmunks placed third with a $29 million take. Rounding out the top five were Charlie Wilson's War and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which took in $9.6 and $9.3 million, respectively.

Johnny Depp and director Tim Burton have enjoyed a long and successful partnership over the years, dating all the way back to 1990's Edward Scissorhands. Their latest collaboration, Sweeney Todd, arrived in theaters on Friday, accompanied by a slew of rave reviews.
I understand why Burton would want to work with such a talented and versatile actor as Depp, but why does he insist on having Johnny wear Kabuki makeup in all of their films? Check out the evidence and see for yourself:
Sweeney Todd (2007)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Ed Wood (1994)
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Kabuki (c. 16th Century)

Those of you seeking a respite from the insanity of the Holiday season are in luck: a host of great new releases arrive at the Cineplex this weekend, including offerings from Judd Apatow, Tom Hanks and Nicolas Cage. But can any of them take down Will Smith's mighty I Am Legend?
A rundown of our reviews of this weekend's new releases:
National Treasure: Book of Secrets
"If 2004's National Treasure was Indiana Jones Lite, this disappointing sequel could very well be called National Treasure Lite." [Full Review]
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
"Ranks as one of the best parody movies in years, a fitting tribute to the likes of the Zucker Brothers and John Landis." [Full Review]
Charlie Wilson's War
"While the real-life Wilson may not have single-handedly won the Cold War, his exploits did provide fodder for one of the most enjoyable films of 2007." [Full Review]
P.S. I Love You
"Shmoopy or not, the movie worked for me. You show a dead loved one, and I pretty much well up—and that’s P.S. I Love You’s stock and trade." [Full Review]
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
"Classic Burton—stylishly and stylistically nightmarish, dark and dusty, and with just enough quirk thrown in." [Full Review]
Also opening: Steep, Blonde Ambition, Flake

I'm back from covering the Globes, having escaped the hoopla and mad rush for interviews with presenters Ryan Reynolds, Quentin Tarantino and Hayden Panettiere.
Unlike the equally early a.m Oscar Nom ceremony (which I also covered last year), the Globes are right down to business. There's no cool graphics with titles flipping live behind the presenter. Nope, the Globes cover such a broad range of categories that they pretty much rattle them off as quickly as possibly. At the Oscars, there was pause for cheers, almost comparable to an NFL draft. The Globes make you pay attention because, as tired as I was, it took a few seconds for whichever nominee they just said to sink in.
So what happened? Well, the Coen Brothers continued their strong run this Awards season with No Country For Old Men scoring noms in the Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Director and Best Actor (Javier Bardem). Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd also scored some impressive noms for director Tim Burton, stars Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter as well as Best Picture in the Comedy or Musical category.
Sadly, no love for Superbad : (
You can check out the full list of nominees right here!
Next Showing: The Golden Globes will be given out on January 13th.

And no surprise--they look amazing. Plus, the movie just won five nominations for the Critics Choice Awards.
Come on - Johnny Depp as a murderous 1800s barber? You know you can't resist.
Check out our photo gallery and clips here.
Next Showing: Sweeney Todd opens on Dec. 21, 2007.

The trailer for Sweeney Todd hit the Interweb this week and potential fans are buzzing. It looks looks like the perfect storm to us - who can think of a better combination than Tim Burton's vision of Johnny Depp as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street?
But we did notice that there isn't a lot of singing in this trailer. And Sweeney Todd is a musical. We're hoping the light-going on the music isn't a sign they're hiding something. Cross your fingers, or the barber will cut them off!
Oh, and notice--is that a little Sacha Baron Cohen we see snuck in there?
