Fox has announced a release date for the follow-up to its shockingly successful CGI talking animal flick Alvin and the Chipmunks. Variety reports that Alvin and the Chipmunks II will debut on March 19, 2010, providing movie critics ample time to fashion some choice barbs for the flick in advance. The first film, which starred My Name is Earl's Jason Lee and Annoying Mac Commercial Guy Justin Long, earned a whopping $358 million worldwide despite garnering a paltry 24% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. No word yet whether Long or Lee will be back for the sequel.

The shockingly successful family flick Alvin and the Chipmunks leads off this week's DVD Tuesday, followed by Tim Burton's shockingly violent Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street -- available in both standard and 2-disc collector's editions. Also debuting on DVD are Jake Paltrow's (Gwyneth's less successful brother) directorial debut The Good Night and the Cuba Gooding Jr. comedy What Love Is.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets maintained its vice-like grip over the box office, topping the charts for the third straight weekend with a $20.2 million gross, according to boxofficemojo.com. Will Smith's I Am Legend continued its impressive run with a $16.3 million take, barely edging out Juno for second place. Jason Reitman's teen pregnancy comedy raked in $16.2 million in its first weekend in wide release, averaging a whopping $8428 per theater.
Rounding out the top five were Alvin and the Chipmunks and disappointing newcomer One Missed Call, which grossed $16 million and $13.5 million, respectively.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets held its spot atop the box office rankings, raking in $35.6 million over the weekend. Family flick Alvin and the Chipmunks continued its surprisingly strong run, grabbing second place with a $30 million gross. Following close behind was Will Smith's juggernaut I Am Legend, which took in a healthy $27.5 million. Rounding out the top five were Charlie Wilson's War and Juno, which took in $11.8 million and $10.3 million, respectively.

The box office appears poised to finish 2007 on a surprisingly high note, with National Treasure: Book of Secrets leading another strong weekend at the Cineplex.
On the heels of I Am Legend's impressive $76 million debut last week, Nicolas Cage's action/adventure sequel took in $45.5 million -- over $10 million more than its predecessor, 2004's National Treasure, made in its debut. Legend grabbed second place, continuing its impressive run with a $34 million gross in its second week in release, while talking animal comedy Alvin and the Chipmunks placed third with a $29 million take. Rounding out the top five were Charlie Wilson's War and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which took in $9.6 and $9.3 million, respectively.

This year's box office received a sudden and welcome jolt this weekend courtesy of reigning box office champion Will Smith and three singing chipmunks.
I Am Legend turned out one of the year's biggest openings with a shocking $76 million estimated take over the weekend to top the box office. Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks was no slouch itself singing itself to a high-pitched $45 million estimate for second place.
New Line's Golden Compass continued to stumble through the holiday box office with an estimated $9 million for a very distant third place. The weekend's other new entry, Queen Latifah's The Perfect Holiday, scored a far from perfect $2.5 million.
Final numbers will be out tomorrow.

Also opening are Youth Without Youth, Francis Ford Coppola's long-awaited return to the director's chair, and The Kite Runner, Marc Forster's controversial adaptation of the acclaimed novel.

Not to be left out of the whole CGI-rendered talking animal movie craze, furry woodland crooners Alvin and the Chipmunks have joined the likes of Babe, Garfield and The Cat in the Hat with their very own live-action flick, opening this Friday. Jason Lee (TV's My Name is Earl) stars as perpetually screaming manager/legal guardian David Seville, with Justin Long (Live Free or Die Hard, those annoying Apple commercials) providing the voice for Chipmunks frontman Alvin.
