This week's DVD Tuesday is a tale of opposites: Juno, the indie comedy smash starring Ellen Page and written by blogging sensation Diablo Cody; the sci-fi sequel Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, available in both standard and extra-bloody unrated editions; Lars and the Real Girl, Ryan Gosling's bittersweet comedy about a young man's love affair with a blow-up doll; and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke as two brothers whose plan to rob their parents' jewelry store goes horribly awry.

There are some nasty rumors floating about the the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) are taking a pass on screening Lars and the Real Girl--the surprisingly well-done little indie about a sad, shy, Midwestern man who orders a Real Doll and then believes she is his living girlfriend.
If the rumors are true, they mean that actor Ryan Gosling--who was nominated last year for his performance in Half Nelson--can be crossed off your list for potential Best Actor nominees. And we think that is just plain old sad.
True, it's become fashionable to talk about how terrific an actor Gosling is. But the thing is, he is really great--and if he treats a quirky little ditty about a man who thinks a sex doll is talking to him with as much respect as one about a teacher with a secret drug addition, then don't we think the Academy should, too?

It's a crowded weekend at the Cineplex for new movies, with four major releases, We Own the Night, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? and The Final Season, opening. Oscar candidate Michael Clayton also expands nationwide.
A rundown of our reviews of this weekend's new releases:
We Own the Night
"A solid, angst-ridden thriller with strong performances from Phoenix, Wahlberg and Duvall." [Full Review]
Elizabeth: The Golden Age
"Takes dull pages of a history book and turns them into powerful, enveloping, stirring, and gorgeous drama." [Full Review]
Why Did I Get Married?
"Why does Tyler Perry have a job?" [Full Review]
Lust, Caution
"If one submits to its rhythms rather than rage against them, its acting and just-so overall design prove a more than inviting combination for the arthouse set." [Full Review]
Sleuth
"An occasionally entertaining, mostly tedious exercise in actor self-indulgence." [Full Review]
Lars and the Real Girl
"A lovely little indie dramedy...Gosling is pitch perfect, oozing painful vulnerability down to his twitching eyes and innocently hopeful gazes" [Full Review]
Also opening: Control, Terror's Advocate
