  • Matthew Vaughn No Longer Directing Thor Flick

Thor!!!Seemingly lost amid all of the excitement over Marvel Studios' recent unveiling of its ambitious slate of superhero films was the unsettling news that director Matthew Vaughn (Stardust, Layer Cake) has been dropped from the big screen adapatation of Thor, based on the adventures of the Norse god and Avengers team member who battles villains with the aid of his magic hammer and long flowing blonde locks. Official word from The Hollywood Reporter is that Vaughn's "holding deal" expired (whatever that means), but it's worth it to note that this is the second time the UK-born director has bailed from a Marvel flick. He'd originally been slated to helm X-Men: The Last Stand before being replaced by Rush Hour director and all-around great guy Brett Ratner mere weeks before the start of production.

Marvel would be wise to hurry up and hire a replacement to helm Thor, since they've already picked a June 4, 2010 release date for the flick. As for Vaughn, methinks he might want to try his luck with DC Comics instead.

  • Marvel Announces Release Dates For Iron Man 2, Avengers, Thor and Captain America

Marvel wasted little time this morning on the heels of Iron Man's big $100 million weekend.

Captain AmericaThor and Avengers projects have been in the planning stages for quite some time, but today Marvel offered release dates for all three movies as well as an Iron Man sequel.

2009 may be quite exciting for Marvel fans, but 2010 and 2011 will be almost too much to handle. It all starts on April 30, 2010 with Iron Man 2 followed just over a month later with Thor on June 6, 2010. The following year the tentatively-titled The First Avenger: Captain America will hit screens on May 6, 2011 followed a few months later with the full-fledged Avengers movie in July of 2011.

And the heads of comic fans around the world will now simultaneously explode...

  • Vaughn to direct Thor

ThorVariety reports that Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Stardust) has signed on to direct Thor, the latest Marvel Comics property to make the leap to the big screen. As the Norse god of thunder and lightning, Thor is considered one of the more powerful characters in the Marvel universe, able to best even the mighty Hulk in feats of strength. He's also a member of The Avengers, another Marvel title currently being readied for the big screen.

Movie fans might remember that Vaughn was the original director attached to X-Men: The Last Stand, but bowed out mere weeks before the start of production amidst rumors of creative differences with producers. Vaughn was subsequently replaced by Rush Hour director Brett Ratner.
