Inspired by true events, Redacted is writer/director Brian De Palma's re-exploration of the atrocities of war--this time in Iraq instead of Vietnam--and how the media impacts the truth of that war. The story centers around a troop of American soldiers on duty at a checkpoint in Iraq and what happens when members of the squad decide to rape an Iraqi girl and murder her family. De Palma uses a faux documentary style--complete with video diaries, surveillance footage, blogs and news pieces to comment on how today's communications methods impact the 'truth' of a conflict. Even the title, Redacted, speaks to the editing (or, more aptly, withholding) of sensitive information before publishing. But for me that commentary took a backseat to the powerful core story itself. Some may find this movie heavy-handed in its depiction of the war, but for me it was finally an Iraq War movie done right.

  • The first 'good' Iraq War movie?

Famed writer/director Brian De Palma enters the Iraq War movie ring with this weekend's Redacted, a faux documentary about a troop of very flawed US soldiers stationed at a checkpoint in Iraq.

The movie is of course stirring debate and commentary, including heated remarks by Bill O'Reilly toward the movie's producers and Keith Olberman's magnificent rebuttal.

For our part, we think having the freedom of speech is the most American thing of all, and that De Palma did a pretty good job using his in Redacted. For more information on the movie, check out our review here.
