      Cute Premise. Nice cast. Extremely slow pacing and meandering story line. A bit of a yawner.

      Writer/director Mike Cahill's feature debut comes in the form of this adventure dramedy starring acting powerhouses Evan Rachel Wood (Running With Scissors, Down in the Valley) and Michael Douglas (Traffic, Wonder Boys) as the uncharacteristically mature 16-year-old Miranda and her mentally ill father Charlie (Douglas). On the surface, King of California is about Charlie's all-consuming obsession/quest for a Spanish explorer's gold he believes to be buried in their suburban California neighborhood. But as Miranda is increasingly torn between the seduction of wanting to believe that his logic is sound and the sinking fear that this is just another hairbrained scheme born out of his deluded psyche, we see that the movie is really about a girl who learns to forgive her father and accept him for who he is. For an 'adventure movie' full of quirk, King of California can feel a bit flat, but Douglas in particular delivers a tremendous performance. Maybe a better renter than a trip to the theater.
