Oh thank God. Offscreen, we may be facing the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, but onscreen there will be stylish shoes and bags! All four ladies -- Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis -- have signed on for a Sex and the City sequel, along with writer-director-producer Michael Patrick King. Though there's no script yet, and no start date for shooting has been set, New Line is hoping to crank out the film in time for a summer 2010 release. No worries. As long as there are the right handbags on set, the ladies can probably just improvise each scene.

The LA Times reports: "No one's confirming it yet, but look for Thursday midnight shows of 'Twilight' to gross north of $7 million. That easily beats the $2.5 million earned by 'Sex and the City' in midnight shows." However, "Twi-hards" still no match for fanboys, with The Dark Knight making $18.4 million in midnight screenings and Star Wars 3: Revenge of the Sith at $16 million.

Okay, so it won't really be called that (at least we hope not), but it has been confirmed that a Sex and the City sequel is officially moving forward. "Yes, there will be a sequel," SatC star Kim Cattrall informed U.K. TV host Melanie Brown (formerly known as Mel B. of the Spice Girls) yesterday. "We will do the sequel next summer."
Cattrall added -- presumably with a straight face -- that it took a while for the first movie to get started because it was "difficult getting everybody who's so incredibly busy all together at the same time." Busy doing what? Turning down all of those Oscar-worthy roles they weren't offered? The truth, we all know, had much more to do with money.
Guys, you might want to start getting prepared now.

Bolstered by its big box office earnings, Warner Bros. is already talking about making a sequel to Sex and the City.
The female-centric movie not only took in a record-setting $55.7 million this weekend, but it managed to muscle Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull out of the top spot, proving that women do matter at the box office -- if you give them something worth seeing.
As a result, Warner Bros., which initially passed on making the Sex and the City movie, but then inherited it when it recently absorbed New Line studios, is now gung-ho to rake in the bucks from a sequel. Warner Bros. exec Dan Fellman says he "certainly hopes" to get a sequel off the ground soon.

The home-invasion horror flick The Strangers landed in third place with a $21 million take, while Iron Man claimed the fourth spot with $14 million. Rounding out the top five was The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, which earned $13 million in its third week in release.
