      I think there is nothing that doesn't surprise about Teeth. Written and directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein, Teeth is the story of high schooler Dawn (Jess Weixler), who is the star speaker for and true believer in her local abstinence group. That is, until some unfortunate circumstances bring her to the realization that she is the living incarnation of the 'vagina dentata' myth--i.e., she has a toothed vagina with a proclivity for biting things when provoked.


      As culty and weird as you'd expect Teeth to be from that description, it is actually surprisingly great. Yes, it's got a little bit of clunk and low-budget-ness about it, but honestly the story is well-designed, the main actors are terrific, and damnit, it's really funny. As if the subject matter didn't let you know, Lichtenstein is definitely not afraid to 'go there,' manipulating shock value perfectly until he has the whole theater screaming and laughing at once. In short, Teeth is a unique hybrid of black comedy and horror movie send-up that is great good fun. And if the blood-soaked nubs of Bobbited-penises bitten off by the angry vagina of a horrified virgin doesn't amuse you, then I don't know what will.
