The consistently funny Tina Fey and Amy Poehler star in the intermittently funny Baby Mama. Fey is Katie Holbrook, a driven career woman who has put her life on hold to get ahead. Approaching middle age, she becomes obsessed with the idea of having a baby. When Katie learns that she is infertile, the undeterred mommy-to-be decides to hire a surrogate. The unlikely candidate is white-trash fortune-seeker Angie Ostrowiski (Poehler). Hijinks ensue as the polar opposites try to live together through the pregnancy after Angie breaks up with her boyfriend Carl (Dax Shepard). Along the way Katie meets Mr. Right (Greg Kinnear) and tries her best to keep up with the surrogate situation, her career and a new boyfriend. Written and directed by former SNL scribe Michael McCullers, Baby Mama starts off strongly enough but quickly loses steam. Jokes fall flat and the overall story feels like it's missing something. Perhaps Fey's writing skills could have helped punch this one up a bit? For such a talented cast (Sigourney Weaver is great as the aging-but-ever-fertile head of the fertility clinic) Baby Mama unfortunately misses the mark.
