Green Lantern Will Be Heavy on Visual Effects

    Green Lanter

The superhero Green Lantern is not as well-known as some of DC Comics' other characters like Superman and Batman, but Warner Bros. is banking on director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) and lead actor Ryan Reynolds changing that when the live-action Green Lantern movie hits theaters.

So far, Reynolds is the only actor cast in the movie, and principal photography isn't expected to begin until March. However, that doesn't mean that work on the movie hasn't already begun. In a recent interview with Empire, Campbell said that there will be roughly 1,300 visual effects shots and that "the process" of coordinating all of those shots is both "daunting" and "mind-blowing." He said that most of the effects revolve around the source of Green Lantern's super powers, stemming from his power ring.

It's energized by a battery on the planet of Oa, which taps into the willpower of everyone in the universe. From that ring you can form constructs. So if you got into a fight, you could form a giant fist. Or a fighter plane."

Green Lantern Is Moving to New Orleans

    Green Lantern

For a while now it's been rumored that the rising Australian dollar was pushing the production of Green Lantern to New Orleans, or possibly Mexico. Apparently there was more than a grain of truth to those rumors, as the Times-Picayune reports that "the rumors are correct" and a New Orleans studio has been contacted to begin production in March.

The Times-Picayune also claims that Green Lantern is the first of three DC movies that will set up a Justice League movie, with The Flash and Wonder Woman being the other two. This comes as a surprise since, last we heard, The Flash script was "moving forward," but Wonder Woman was being "called back."

It makes sense that DC Entertainment would want to rival Marvel's slate of Avengers, and Justice League director George Miller has admitted that the movie would be made "eventually."

Jackie Earle Haley Discusses Green Lantern Rumors

Jackie Earle HaleyOver the weekend, rumors surfaced that Jackie Earle Haley was cast in the role of Green Lantern nemesis Sinestro, but Haley told MTV that nothing's official yet.

I just heard about this, literally. I know the guys that are doing it. It's exciting to me. I heard about [Ryan Reynolds being in it]. I'd love to work with him. Itmakes me want to go get the Green Lantern comics and start reading up.

So while Haley isn't cast yet, he is interested, and may end up in the part. For now, he's got time to figure out who Sinestro is.

I don't know much about it. I'm a comics fan, but I haven't gotten into that one yet. I guess I'd better do my homework.

Green Lantern Rumors: Jackie Earle Haley to Play Villain; Superman to Cameo

    Green Lantern

In what is admittedly only a rumor at this point, Harry Knowles of Ain't it Cool News is reporting that a "pretty reliable" source has tipped him off about some very interesting Green Lantern movie news. If what AICN is reporting is true, it could be the first sign that DC Comics/Warner Bros. is listening to the fans and taking a page from Marvel Studios' playbook by making GL part of a shared universe, rather than a stand-alone universe like its Batman franchise.

As of now, the only official cast pick is Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, the most popular Green Lantern from the DC Comics series. In the comics, Hal's arch-nemesis is Sinestro, a former Green Lantern twisted by his need for order and control, and the character is expected to be the major antagonist for the feature. According to AICN, that role could be going to Jackie Earle Haley, who famously portrayed Rorschach in Watchmen and will be starring as Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street relaunch.

And, in news that would trump the Hayley announcement if it turns out to be true, Green Lantern may be visited by at least one other major character from the DC Universe. According to Knowles' source, Superman will make an appearance in the movie. If this rumor turns out to be true, it could be the preamble to the Justice League movie that Warner Bros. has been planning for years, in much the same way Marvel Studios is planning on interweaving characters and concepts in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and The First Avenger: Captain America leading up to The Avengers.

Ryan Reynolds Confirms He's Still Deadpool and Green Lantern

Ryan ReynoldsRyan Reynolds appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, where he publicly confirmed that he will appear as both Deadpool and Green Lantern. While Fallon found the castings a "double whammy," Reynolds was more modest.

At his point [playing both roles] makes you just like an Internet hero, nothing really more than that.

Reynolds also mentioned he was "4-5 months away from beginning shooting" Green Lantern, but couldn't tell Fallon much more than that.

It's crazy, it's the only job I've ever had that I'm not allowed to really talk about. I think there's like a representative from Warner Brothers who I'm sure is following me around ready to blow-dart me if I say a single word,. I probably have a chip in me somewhere, like if I start talking about it, I'll just pass away.

Since Fallon had no idea what Green Lantern's powers were, Reynolds did offer him a basic understanding.

A lot of [the film] is sort of like a space epic and some of it is on planet Earth. [Green Lantern] has this ring and he's been chosen to have this power and the ring can kind of create anything that his will or his imagination can conjure up.

While Reynolds' explanation is pretty basic, he has been doing his homework. Late Night producer Mike Shoemaker Tweeted to Green Lantern comic book writer Geoff Johns that he made Reynolds deliver the Green Lantern oath.

I just went in Ryan Reynolds' dressing [room] and tested him on the GL oath. He nailed it!

Green Lantern Production Headed South of the Border

Green LanternEconomic woes really do effect everybody, even movies with a $150 million dollar budget. Originally set to shoot in Australia, the Green Lantern production discussed moving to New Orleans to escape the $20 million budget increase the rising Australian dollar was creating, but may move to Mexico instead.

Green Lantern was scheduled to start production in Fox Studios Australia starting in November, but has been pushed to early next year. With Warner Bros still currently renting the facility, it's still possible that Australia will keep the project, but a source told Australia's Inside Film Magazine that it's not looking good.

We still haven't given up on Green Lantern but the way the exchange rate is going up it's looking more and more unlikely.

Better brush up on your Spanish, Ryan Reynolds. Looks like you're going to Mexico!

Green Lantern Casting Call Announces Movie's Villains

Green Lantern Production on Green Lantern is moving forward, despite possibly moving from Australia to New Orleans. SpoilerTV found an official casting call for the movie, which reveals a trio of potential villains for the movie:

[CAROL FERRIS]26-32,a smart and attractive woman with an MBA. She started as a pilot andnow runs Ferris Aircraft. She is a work-a-holic...FEMALE LEAD

[DR. HECTOR HAMMOND]27-35, Character actor who is austere and impersonal, he is real "scummy." He is a pathologist and also the son of a Senator.

[SINESTRO]Mid-30s to Mid-40s, he is smart, tough, intimidating and in great physical shape.

Carol Ferris is a love interest of Green Lantern's who is eventually turned into the super villain Star Sapphire. Dr. Hector Hammond is an evil genius with telepathic powers, while Sinestro, Green Lantern's longtime nemesis, began as his mentor, until Sinestro's totalitarian ways put them at odds, forever pitting them as mortal enemies. Abin-Sur is Green Lantern's predecessor and the only non-enemy in the casting call.

How much the movie will involve the three villains is unknown, perhaps only Sinestro does battle with Green Lantern while both Ferris and Hammond wait in the wings for the sequels? Fans will have to wait until The Green Lantern opens June 17, 2011, or stay tuned to ReelzChannel for more updates.

Bradley Cooper Explains How He Lost the Green Lantern Role

    Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper admitted that losing the Green Lantern role was difficult, but during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien Cooper explained that he's past the rejection:

I did get a chance to try out for it, which was amazing to even get a chance. Ryan Reynolds got it — who, by the way, if I was directing the movie, I would cast him. He's perfect. He actually looks like a superhero.

Cooper did get to audition for director Martin Campbell, but Cooper's performance shared too much with another famous superhero for him to get the part:

I couldn't not do Christian Bale's Batman when I was doing the audition. I don't know what it was! I put a mask on and the director was like, "Okay Bradley, be regular and talk." And I was like, "Yeah, got it... [in a deep, gravely Batman voice] listen, Sally, we're going to have to take your family away if you don't listen to me!" At one point, I actually walked back and saw it, because they have it on the monitor while you're auditioning. I saw a little clip as they were rewinding it, and I thought, "Oh my god, that can't be." It looked like a Saturday Night Live sketch! I was like, "Oh, I'm not getting this! Now I can really do my Batman! Who gives a s***?"

No need to feel pity for him, though, as Cooper is far from hurting for work after the success of The Hangover. His next movie, All About Steve, opens September 4.

Green Lantern Production to Celebrate Fat Tuesday in 2010?

Green LanternWith Green Lantern possibly changing its Australian shoot, SlashFilm is now reporting that Warner Bros. may move the production to New Orleans. A source claims that Green Lantern is "scouting in Louisiana" and will likely shoot in and around New Orleans next year. That is, unless Warner Bros. can broker a deal with the Australian government.

The Sydney-based Fox Studios was initially chosen for the $150-million Green Lantern due to the exchange rate benefits that the sagging Australian dollar provided. However, the recent 11 percent rise in the value of the Australian dollar will leave Warner Bros. looking at a $25-million increase in their budget. The studio is currently looking for concessions from the Australian government in order to keep the production in Sydney.

Fans are less concerned with the economics of Green Lantern and are instead wondering how it will be having Ryan Reynolds play both Green Lantern and Deadpool, as evidenced in this fan-made video.

    Green Lantern Production in Trouble?

Green LanternThe Corps is facing an unexpected villain.

Fox Studios, the Sydney-based home to the $150-million-budgeted Green Lantern, was chosen due to the budget-stretching prowess of the sagging Australian dollar. But that may have changed.

Production Weekly used its Twitter page to announce some good news about the Australian economy, but bad news for Green Lantern:

Green Lantern's proposed Australian shoot is understood to be under threat after therising Australian dollar has blown out production costs.

Who knew an improving economy was bad news?

Production on Green Lantern was set to begin mid-September. How this financial crisis will affect Green Lantern is uncertain. Stay tuned for more updates.
